Cliven Bundy, the Nevada rancher who famously got in an armed standoff with federal agents over a land dispute, told Politico that he privately met with Republican presidential candidate Rand Paul on Monday.
Paul gave a speech Monday at Eureka Casino in Mesquite, Nev., which Bundy attended. But to the ranchers surprise, he and his family were invited by campaign aides to speak with Paul in a backroom.
Bundy claims the encounter took about 45 minutes. The main topic of conversation was allegedly land rights, with the rancher arguing that Nevada is already a sovereign state. The federal government doesnt need to turn this land back to us. Its already state land. Bundy told Politico that the libertarian-minded Kentucky senator was sympathetic to his point of view.
Bundy is a controversial figure, even outside of his decision to take up arms against government employees. The rancher once referred to African-Americans as the Negro and said blacks abort their young children, they put their young men in jail, because they never learned how to pick cotton. And Ive often wondered, are they better off as slaves, picking cotton and having a family life and doing things
? Many conservatives Paul included were forced to apologize and denounce the man they once rallied behind.
