(78,249 posts)The women had to play some matches on artificial turf.
FIFA takes this seriously enough for the men that, when the U.S. hosted the World Cup in 1994, they made Giants Stadium put a temporary natural grass pitch over its artificial surface.

(5,644 posts)Did the men in 2014 have 25 million viewers?

(5,644 posts)maybe she was just referring to the American audience.
Travis_0004
(5,417 posts)It had the largest american audience ever.
On a global scale there was 70 million people that watched.
Compare that to about 900 million that watched the mens final.

(5,644 posts)I guess ladies will have to continue running on artificial turf and try not to break their necks while they are winning.
btw: didn't Serena/Venus fix that money issue for the ladies in tennis?

(72,790 posts)for the final, I believe. Around 26 million is what I heard.
edited: the 26 million figure may be just viewers watching in the USA.

(19,089 posts)I don't care how many viewers they had ... They are a national team that played in a World Cup Final ...
Because women's soccer was late to the game, they shall forever be punished? ... Effing nonsense ... FIFA takes in enough money to pay equal amounts to every team at each level ...
The discrimination needs to end ...

(67,848 posts)I totally agree with you, hence the post.
Fuck it is for trying to reason with the unreasonable.
Thanks for your post.

(26,117 posts)But seriously, the compensation should be equitable; the athletes work just as hard, and FIFA can afford it.

(765 posts)even the smallest criticism related to a feminist or even a general women-related issue is immediately met with strong opposition and argumentativeness. Either that, or it's soundly ignored. I find this very interesting.
I've read some pretty sexist things here, things that at first I was surprised to see on a democratic site that has many progressive members...but then I wasn't surprised upon reflection. Sexism and outright misogyny is a constant in American society and progressives haven't made much progress when it comes to its pervasive nature. What's worse is that it is not criticized in the same way that other bigotry is completely condemned with no exceptions. There's always a "yeah, but..." when it comes to a woman's issue. A man punched a woman in the face...on camera..."yeah, but HE SAID she kneed him in the groin..." A woman is raped every two minutes in this country..."yeah, but what about false accusations?" The US Women's World Cup team is given far less money than the men's team..."yeah, but the women aren't as popular..." and on and on.
There's a lot of hostility and victim-blaming and excuses when it comes to women's issues around here. But it's not only around here. It's everywhere. It is too bad that there is no respite from it on the DU, but that only proves we have a lot of work to do because if any group is going to properly address it, it is the left. There's no one else, so let's get to it and stop shitting on women and "yeah, butting" this bigotry.
