Taken within the context of middle eastern nations who never listen, negotiate, compromise or capitulate, this is a brilliant piece of statesmanship. As Rachel declared last night, "It matters who the president is."
While Trump is treating the media like his own reality TV show, and declaring that he's the best at everything in the world and everyone in the world likes him, etc, Obama quietly set the stage over the course of his presidency to level the sanctions that brought the youth of Iran to the bargaining table. He waited out other Iranian leaders who would not have made this agreement. It may be safe to say that he had Kerry in the wings to follow Hilary into this historic precipice. People like us will never know that for sure.
He also worked quietly in the background in order to allow the Iranian leaders to hold onto their local powers with their own constituents. He knows they have to pull their own people along to make these changes. I think that's why the deal ultimately went through: World leaders trust him. World leaders believe in him. Ultimately, the youth of Iran know that they really don't want war with the US or europe. They know he won't be president forever. The youth are not as concerned with the ancient religious battles. They see what's going on in afghanistan and Syria. And unlike U.S. conservatives, they know that Obama is not threatening their religious practices.
It's hope and change. Just like he promised. Sorry, McCain, we're not bombing Iran. Obama cares more about regular people all over the world than his own political career. Hence: Cuba, Health care, the end of the Iraq invasion, ending our dependency on middle eastern oil. He's even keeping a lid on Putin. It's more than foreign policy: These are real changes made in the most difficult places in the world, where change never happens. The man is more than we deserve, and he'll never be given full credit for his accomplishments. But his polling numbers are true:
Huff Post had his latest poll numbers: More in favor of the agreement than against it.
Imagine where we would be if we could keep him on for a 3rd term.
