No, thanks: Military asks armed militiamen to go away and stop trying to guard recruiting centers

Armed men have taken up self-appointed sentry duty outside military recruitment centers after another armed man opened fire on a recruiting center and killed five in Chattanooga, Tennessee last week.

The military has asked they not do so.

There is “always some concern about safety for our soldiers and civilians when someone is walking around with weapons,” an unnamed official told local WFLA.

Militiamen in at least five states — Texas, Georgia, West Virginia, Ohio and Iowa — are patrolling recruiting centers, citing the shooting spree by 24-year-old Mohammod Abdulazeez on Thursday that killed five service members. Abdulazeez was also killed in the attack.

But Jerry Pleasant, commander of a Texas militia group, said he doesn’t have any plans to back off despite what military officials said.

Now they have to decide is Jethro a threat or a well meaning yokel?

How sad is it when untrained nuts with guns are guarding well trained soldiers? Looks kinda silly?

The military shouldn't just ask that these nut-jobs go away but demand it, and if they don't they should be arrested.

5. MP's should be the ones protecting the military offices

They should arrest anyone who approaches with a weapon.

I'm shocked that armed MP's aren't guarding more military installations. I was dismayed when private contractors started guarding the army base near me.

The problem is that most recruiting centers aren't actually federal property, and are simply rented facilities or offices in strip malls. They're not "on base". Legally, soldiers are flat out prohibited from acting as guards off base (that's a law enforcement duty, and soldiers can't engage in off-base law enforcement duties under Posse Comitatus), and they have to comply with state laws when they're carrying off base for other reasons (except for a whole slew of exemptions that mostly have to do with moving between bases and training). Unless there's a declared emergency and the governor has approved it, American soldiers have no more or less right to carry firearms in civilian areas than you or I do. In states like California, where loaded open carry is flat out banned, soldiers would face the same legal consequences for arming themselves in recruiting centers that we would face if we armed ourselves in a grocery store. The state legislature would need to amend state law before it could happen.

And that's not a bad thing.

the population as the 2nd requires we do and place them in militias.

These are LITERALLY children in adult bodies.

They should NEVER be ANYWHERE near a gun.

How do they propose to stop terrorists from entering recruiting offices? What will they look for? Will it be (1) Middle Eastern appearance, (2)Islamic appearance, or (3) Muslim appearance

I mean, otherwise, what would be the point of having them? They are pining/dreaming for the day when they'll become the heroic "good guy with a gun" and gain instant celebrity status, hence the need to have a gun with them at all times in all locations, being helpfully accommodated by gun-nutty politicians.

7. Gun nuts need to keep their toys in their basement suites, sane folks and the military want them there.

If there is paranoia around, there you will find the paranoid-loving, self-loathing, gun-toting "militiaman" SuperZero.

Because nothing says we love the military than being unwelcome and uninvited armed "volunteers".

But isn't this typical of the gun lover, this delusion of grandeur? It really is a sickness.
