My American guests were fascinated with all the gay nannies in Sweden. I explained that they were the children's fathers.

(1,721 posts)Fathers *must* take paternity leave. I was told that most Swedes do not put their children in childcare prior to 18 months.
It's a much more humane place. Someone told me that in Sweden, after 40, you automatically receive an extra two weeks of vacation. I said, "Oh, that means that companies are less likely to hire someone over 40, right?" The Swede looked dumbfounded, and then kind of sad. I had to explain how extremely cut throat Americans are.

(1,721 posts)The Swedes understand that they're combating many millennia of patriarchy, and they're trying to create a society truly based on equality between men and women.
The problem that I do have with Sweden is that there are factions within their government that will hand Assange over to the US, and they're cynically over-reaching with well-intentioned laws for good purposes in order to extradict him.
Still, it is a much more humane society. There's no doubt about that.
