20,000 apply for 877 Ala. Hyundai plant jobs

http://www.freep.com/article/20120531/BUSINESS0104/205310459/1014/rss13

MONTGOMERY, Ala. -- So far nearly 20,000 people have applied for the 877 new jobs that Hyundai is filling for a third shift at its Alabama assembly plant, and applications are still coming.

"It just continues to grow," said Scott Gordy of Hyundai Motor Manufacturing Alabama's human resources department.

The deadline to apply is Saturday, but Hyundai was so overwhelmed by the initial response that it suspended the application process on May 18 because of the high volume.

Last week, HMMA issued a statement saying that it would reopen the application period through Saturday but warned that applications after May 18 may not have time to be processed. Gordy said later applicants will be seen "as needed" for future hires.

115K reduced to 77K for April jobs, May at 69k but likely to be revised downward as most months are over the past 4+ years. This situation though, and on the few interviews I've managed to get invited to wherein 150 or more applicants for a $10/hr that 5 years ago was a $20/hr job is so much more telling about the unemployment situation than those numbers the gov put out.
