But, not surprising. I live in Hell. The people here are cold, self-righteous assholes that only read the Bible for the anger and hatred, bypassing the words of love, tolerance and charity of their Christ. Yes, I was a Christian once. I still think Jesus was a fine dude. Pretty sure he wouldn't see feeding children as an evil Socialist plot.
This is no way for me to start a Monday. I actually have tears in my eyes. My heart is genuinely aching. But, I love you people. I know I can come here, see the same damned story and get a much different reaction.

Edit: I want to thank all of those that have posted comments at The Courier. You've probably got the editors heads spinning!

(10,103 posts)It bothers the hell out of me. Feeding children shouldn't be a controversial thing. Food is one way to make sure the next generation grows up, and grows up with their mind and bones intact. "Bring back the textile mills?" Good God people. Why don't we bring back indentured servitude? Oh, wait, they're working on that.
I despair.
Healthy and educated children are more likely to grow up to be productive and happy citizens. But, Arizona is all about Prison, Inc.

(763 posts)They've been convinced since SF in '68 that the Baby Boomers are self-entitled, self-involved, selfish pampered brats. Problem is they're just too damn many of them. It's not going to get better until some of them start having their anti-Michelle-Obama heart attacks and descending to the hell to which they have tried to condemn the rest of us.
Sick of boomers on the right AND left. It's either 'we tried that and it didn't work, so don't bother,' or 'I got mine, fuck you.' Either way, STFU and get out of the way. Gen X is coming through.

(3,691 posts)I purposely avoid reading the comments. There are always cold-hearted people who enjoy taking a crap on them.
What's important is that hungry kids are getting a warm meal during summer

(8,492 posts)One of my clients works for a similar program. She almost had me in tears a few weeks ago. There are good people here, they just have quieter voices and bigger hearts.

I did too. I seldom comment on that site, anymore. The anger and hatred, along with the "FOX Facts" weren't good for my health. This...I couldn't walk away from, though.

Comments are worse if the kids aren't white.

(9,933 posts)are what allows that kind of hateful rhetoric. I think if online news stories got rid of anonymous posting that much of that would disappear.
The comment section always makes me despair for humanity.

(7,581 posts)I am stunned at the selfishness and cruelty displayed by most of the commenters on this story - and I bet you all would call yourselves good Christians!! Let's see - what did Jesus say?? Take care of your brother. Take care of the children. Jesus would want nothing to do with you "Christian" conservative Republicans, with your selfishness and heartlessness. Protesting food for kids??? I bet you there is a very warm place in hell waiting for you all.

(7,581 posts)hate what those commenters are saying, too.

(8,492 posts)It's a story in my local paper about the Summer Lunch Program offered at several local schools. It's a much needed program for any community. But, our local teapers and Cons don't agree. In fact, they're making disgusting comments about putting kids to work, taking the kids from their parents, etc. and worse, and etc. and much worse.
It may take a village to raise a child, but it takes a town full of village idiots to try to starve one.

(28,627 posts)I expect they are the greedy ones but once they lose their jobs, healthcare and their homes they change their tune. Maybe teachers could give lessons on what it is like to not have access to food. I remember when I was at elementary school we had a speaker who showed us pictures about the famine in Africa and I was shocked. It had a lasting impact. we need to educate people in this country about greed.

(11,803 posts)and sorry to say, Arizona is one of them.
I'd rather leave the country, and my entire family, than move to a place surrounded by such hateful people.
And you know what's so sad about that? I hate myself for even thinking that because I know how many amazing liberals, progressives, and other Democrats live in places like Arizona- because I lived in Oklahoma awhile back, and I loved it, and the people.
I'm sorry I read the comments.

(18,186 posts)to know that the only people who have the time/inclination to post such drivel are twisted, sad folks whose own families don't want anything to do with them. Nobody with a loving family/friend group is going to have time or sentiment to express what's in those comments.
And many who wrote such ignorant comments are just kids in their moms' basements. Trying to puff ulcers.
For any older generation folks who might post such crap, they are all hypocrites, because not one of them made it to old age without some help, somewhere, from someone.
