VANCOUVER, British Columbia (AP) Canadian conservation officers have euthanized a black bear that ate the remains of a convicted murderer.
British Columbia Environment Minister Terry Lake said Monday the bear's description matched that of one seen guarding a cache that contained the remains of Rory Wagner, 54. Examinations of fur at the scene as well as teeth and claw marks confirmed the bear that was euthanized is the one that ate the remains.
Lake said the animal was put down because bears remember food sources.
Officials suspect the bear pulled Wagner's body from his car after he died on a remote logging road.
Wagner pleaded guilty to second-degree murder in 1994. He and two others were charged with a killing a man who they believed had sexually assaulted a family member. He served his prison time and was released.

Sure, the guy was released and already dead. Why'd they have to kill the bear for doing what a bear does?

That's what I was thinking. That bear must have had a cache of dead convicted murderers.

(8,994 posts)Not sure if the murder victim did molest a family member, but if they did, then I have pity for this guy. He might have in fact been justified considering they reduced his case to 2nd degree and let him back out into society.
Anyone know much about that case?

(8,994 posts)Something about it might attack a living human down the line or something.
If they euthanize the bear, it's wrong, if they don't, it might attack a jogger or camper, and they'd be wrong, too.
It sucks to be the authorities in this situation.

(24,936 posts)The whole idea of a bear "getting a taste for human flesh" sounds unrealistic to me. I can understand how bears who might be older might see humans as easy targets, but just because they ate some human carrion, doesn't mean they'll start hunting humans. I think it was an easy meal for the bear.
