First Lady Applauds NYC Plan To Ban Sugary Drinks

(06-05) 11:53 PDT WASHINGTON (AP) --

First lady Michelle Obama says banning big servings of sugary drinks isn't anything she'd want to do at the federal level but she applauded New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg on Tuesday for proposing to do just that at city eateries.

In an interview with The Associated Press, Mrs. Obama said there's no "one-size-fits-all" solution for the country's health challenges. But she said she "applauds anyone who's stepping up to think about what changes work in their communities," and she's citing New York as one example.

Banning things has NEVER been a rational solution, and it still isn't.

5. No kidding. If you want less of something, tax it.

If you want more of something, subsidize it.

I don't think a ban is in the works, just a cutting down of the ridiculous washtub drink sizes. It's still a little silly to ban them.

I'm not in favor of banning anything, including drugs and guns.

there's a huge difference between banning sugary drinks and banning sugary drinks over 16 oz.

This was a dumb idea, and Mrs. Obama ought to know better.

all you get is infantilized adults.

That's great for some, because those infantilized are also dependent. Some people need to have others depend on them; ego-stoking and ego-stroking are a fact of life.

But I already find too many adults are infantile, thank you.

11. will anyone be infantilized if they can't buy a giant soda in NYC?

seriously, do you think that after, say, 10 years of this law, the adults of NYC will be any different than adults elsewhere? Any more infantalized?

Promote healthy eating, of course, but where does it end? Banning people from ordering more than one hamburger at a fast food place? Banning people from buying doughnuts? How about banning them from buying a 12 pack of Coke?

It's a slippery slope.

It doesn't prevent anyone from buying multiple drinks in a fast food place, or going to a supermarket and buying a GALLON of soda which they can if they want, drink all in one sitting.

It is stupid at the very least and will not work. It is much the same as the high NYC taxes ($100 a carton) on cigarettes. Go to the Reservations and get a carton for $15.

Prohibition didn't work either. It just made ordinary citizens criminals.

Hopefully, if the ban on CUP SIZES is put into place, slightly more people will become health conscious.
