A North Carolina teenager was suspended for possession of drugs despite the fact that she passed a drug test. However, she was punished simply because of the smell of weed.
According to WNCN, Garner Magnet High School sophomore Jakayla Johnson said that a school resource officer smelled marijuana in the hall and interrupted her Chinese class looking for the source of the smell.
I was feeling embarrassed because they called me out of everybody, Jakayla said, noting that the officer had singled her out after only five minutes of searching. They told me to spread my fingers and they smelled my fingers, she added.
According to Wake County School documents, It was explained to Jakayla that for her hands to smell so pungently of marijuana she would have to have possessed it in her hands at some recent point in time.
Jakaylas mother, Tameka, said that she was shocked when the school called to notify her that her daughter had been suspended for five days for possession of marijuana. I said not my child. You have the wrong child, because I know my child, she said.

(82,849 posts)We're living in a post-racial society now; the Supreme Court said so. It can't be about race, because it's never about race.

(54 posts)Cleomes look just like weed before they bloom and they smell like some wonderful, funky stuff.
I've had a lot of fun with them. Some politician/insurance salesman/preacher type (who can tell???), knocked on my door one afternoon looking for someone. When I answered the door, and his question, he looked at my not-yet-bloomed cleomes and said, "Those are interesting plants." I replied "Yeah, they're cleomes. Look just like marijuana, don't they?" He hesitated and said, "Yes, they do." He was mentally deciding if it was safe to say he knew what weed looked like.
Cleomes, AKA spider plant. Check them out.

My wife presses dried leaves and flowers between glass. One popular one that gets lots of attention (and sales) at art shows is the Japanese Maple Leaf. We have a friend who is a police officer and she knew what it was the moment she saw it. People who buy them have a lot of fun with them.
Imagine, Bob Marley raking maple leaves in the fall.........................

(1,134 posts)He did some sort of test in which he had me follow a pencil with my eyes and some other stuff. He said it was his opinion I was under the influence and that I needed to go take a UA. Which I did and it came back clean due to the fact I didn't do drugs or anything. The guy was adamant though and he continued to push my parents to put me in some anti-drug program. It made things a bit difficult for me at home.
I don't have must trust in school administrators.

(18,186 posts)has very little to do with drugs?
A dumb-as-rocks authoritarian school and school resource officer just damaged a student's education for NOTHING.
The Garner Magnet School CAN fuck up your life using the War on Drugs, and they WILL fuck up your life, even if you are completely innocent. The War on Drugs is about power, greed and cruelty, with absolutely NOTHING to do with public safety.
78 people die every day due to opioid overdose, but North Carolina's Garner Magnet High School is fighting "smells." What the everliving fuck?
Are cops and schools in NC so dumb they don't know that lots of things "smell like weed?" Certain azaleas smell JUST like cannabis flowers. Did the girl touch or pick one? Burnt coffee and other substances can also smell like that. When did cops and school administrators become so single-minded, so goddamned motherfucking ignorant that NO ONE TAUGHT THEM THIS?
I had to move a Japanese maple the other day, 4 ft tall, red branches with green flowers. One of my neighbor's kids drove by as I rode past with it in the passenger floorboard, and her eyes got all big. I looked over and realized that, to an idiot cop or neighbor's kid, that might look like a cannabis plant. What if I'm arrested before I arrive at the person's house, and I end up spending thousands of dollars defending myself against a goddamned maple, like folks have had to do with okra and tomatoes when dumbass law enforcement insisted these veggies were fucking pot?
But I made it unscathed, probably because the cops around here are smarter than your average bear. They would already know, even if they did stop me, it wasn't a controlled tree. But I really do worry about people who live in areas where the cops are so dim they believe every plant is a potential pot plant, every pot smell is pot.
Fucking morons, I hate this for this kid, but she needs to learn fast and young how goddamned STUPID our war on drugs really is, and the completely ignorant dumbasses who are waging it.
It hasn't got a goddamned thing to do with drugs.
It's about race, expanding the power of the state, benefiting certain industries and whittling away our freedoms. Can't even drive around with cash in our country anymore because cops can steal it from you if a dog sniffs it and smells something funny. No probable cause? No problem. They'll just take it anyway and it's up to you to PROVE that the money was legitimately obtained.

(18,186 posts)and the War on Drugs has done nada to lower drug use rates. They remain the same as when our nation's draconian assholes banded together to spend trillions ruining lives and neighborhoods.
I guess the high school gal in the OP needs to learn early that her education and her thriving future are not the concerns of the government, law enforcement or her school. Her state legislators, high school principal and uneducated school resource officer only want her to learn one thing:
Where the fuck is Loretta Lynch on this bullshit? Where the fuck is Obama or any Dem leader to say enough of this bullshit? I am so sick of cowards who KNOW this is wrong but utter nary a peep--like most of the other jerks in my self-serving, chicken-shit Boomer generation.

(4,596 posts)We were recreational every day. It was quite something else. Good times. I went on to college, made the Dean's list every semester, then on to grad school and I am perfectly contented with my life. I still partake on occasion if the moment is right, but it isn't the same for me any more. I feel like it is more of a youth activity, and I have no regrets.

(18,186 posts)I'm happy for you that you were high all through high school.
This article is discussing a student who was not high, and tested negative for cannabis, which means she hasn't used it.
Are we so sick as a nation that we now just willy-nilly disrupt young people's lives because they SMELL like something we associate with "bad?" No scientific basis, no constitutional basis, no fucking logical basis for it but, oh well.
