(6,335 posts)I think his net worth is only like $3-500K. Hillary and the 1% are in a whole different league. Bernie's even close to that kind of rich.
Then billionaires are in a whole other league. the top .1%. These are who she's mostly talking about. They hoard their wealth in offshores to compete for the Forbes annual richest list. Money becomes a scorecard for them. ........While vets sleep in the bushes.
NobodyHere
(2,810 posts)And having 500k in savings, six figure salary, and a very good pension is well off IMO.
ErikJ
(6,335 posts)Besides he's been actively advocating to have taxes on the rich increased to top rate of 55% mostly on the top 5-1% I believe, which is still WAY below the 1950's under Eisenhower 92% when we had the largest expansion of the middle class in US history.
Hillary not so much.
Low taxes on the rich allow and encourage them to hoard and stash their cash which damages the US economy and creates poverty.
NobodyHere
(2,810 posts)ErikJ
(6,335 posts)but like I said. His wealth or well-offness is nothing compared to those in the top 1% especially the billionaires. But he doesnt flaunt his moderate wealth and I'm sure he'd be comfortable on much less. Hell, billionaire Democrat Warren Buffet lives in the same house he bought in 1960 and his favorite restaurant is a hamburger joint. Which is prob why he's also advocating for higher taxes on the rich too.

(1,178 posts)I once heard a good description of the difference between being rich and being wealthy. The basketball or baseball player who has a 10 million contract is rich. The guy who owns the entire team is wealthy.
Having a net worth of 500K and a pension makes one comfortable at a reasonable level. It does not allow one to drive a McLaren, own an island or a jet, mingle with the upper crust at the country club or get an invitation to the World Economic Forum in Davos. It most certainly is not enough to handle catastrophic medical expenses or long-term care for a loved one without an expensive insurance policy. The distance between the moderately affluent and the wealthy is a vast chasm.

(14,308 posts)Us old guys should start a thread for young people offering what went right and wrong for us. Maybe we can do some good.
My nuggets of advice to the young are...
1. Don't have kids until you're financially stable.
This has given me opportunities to help my kid that others haven't had. On the other hand, we only had one kid because we waited pretty late to have him, and when I coached Little League, the other dads were much younger than I was.
2. Get a license. Something that not many people have.
This will help your job prospects tremendously.

Some of us care quite a bit. Keeping Drumpf out of the WH is paramount and some of us are very adamant on that point and will vote for HRC holding our noses, if that's what it takes. I'd rather get to vote for Bernie for the 2nd time, sure, but I will do everything humanly possible to ensure that the bloated nasty D is never our president. (978 posts)They should get their tax breaks while Jodie and Bernie with the vast fortunes take the whole thing. After all, she only has 150 million and using a tax haven like Delaware to avoid taxes. Let's make Bernie and Jodie pay for the poor. Those are burdens that Hilary and her supporters shoud not have to carry.
Let us make taxes volunteriy.
let us continue to let private interersts dictate the terms. Because as we all know, the poor attacking the rich is pure envy.
And we should not be so hard on Wall Street. They are innocent victims of leftie violence, intimidation and envy. Those pesky OWS should go get a job rather than spewing out leftie hate towards the successfu job creators.
Because taxes are theft unless you make a leftie or a working class stiff pay. Then it's called "common sacrifice"...
Since when was it a progressive stand to be against progressive taxation?
Perhaps Hillary and her supporters are not progressive at all, but in name only?
You RW "dems" talk about "free stuff" and think that the money Hillary takes from Wall Street and other places doesn't have stringts attached to it. In other words, Hillarybots are in favor of getting free money to win elections to stop the popuation from getting "free stuff" like healthcare and education. Two luxury items we don't really need.
Why are Hiarybots against investing in a country's future through education and securing it with promoting common welfare while being for getting free money from large corporations at the same time?
Can any Hillarysupporter explain that to me?
One more question:
What happened to the money Hillary colected in Holywood last month?
Did it all go to the "down ticket", or did most of it go directly back to Hillary so she could pay online trolls to smear Bernie and hype up a proffessional liar whom have more in common with the Bushies than OWS?

(17,635 posts)So, what's your point?
I'd personally be happy to pay a higher tax rate, as a relatively well-off person. (Not near Jodie, Bernie, or Hillary, but relatively better off than a lot of people). It would just have to be fairly and progressively applied - higher rates for higher income/wealth. Keeping in mind that many of the very wealthy don't necessarily have high taxable income.

(1 post)Taxing someone is like punishing the kid who gets the good grades, or the athlete who wins a race.
.
What should be controlled is Monopoly, so the market is Free, and everyone has an equal economic opportunity.
.
When you are born, all Land and Natural Resources are already owned by someone.
That's a collective Monopoly.
.
It's like turning up at a game of Monopoly late, when all the properties on the board have already been allocated to players, and you are told to buy your way into the game with only the $200 you get from passing "GO" each round.
.
You are not starting off in a Free Market, you are starting off in a Monopolised Market.
.
Anyone who still thinks you should now be taxed on the $200 you earn, is too stupid to breathe oxygen by themselves.
.
If you want to make the Monopoly game and all players economically equal, then the rents charged when someone lands on a property, should be divided by the number of players in the game, and distributed equally to all players.
.
Then being the richest player, would come down to strategy, skills and lucky chances,
and no player would be excluded from the game.
.
Charge Rent on the Economic Value of Land and natural resources,
and use it for public purpose, or distribute it equally as a Universal Income to everyone.
.
It's called Georgism, after the American politician and economic philosopher, Henry George,
who proposed it in his best selling book, "Progress and poverty", published in 1879.
.
Proponents of his system discuss it as Land Value Tax (LVT), or Earth Sharing, or Geoism.
.
It's universally agreed that it's the cheapest method of collecting revenue, and the most unavoidable.
.
It was used very successfully in Denmark.
.

(12,839 posts)... I do know that your off-hand suggestion that rich liberals should just shut up and pay more taxes if they want to is not a solution to national income inequality, which is a systemic issue. But I suspect you already know that; it just doesn't fit your agenda.
And I'm sorry if this is actually Hannity; you two are kind of hard to tell apart in online forums.
