An interesting discussion on FB this morning.

I posted a message wherein I used the name Donald Drumpf. An acquaintance weighed in:

Him: Trump. The man’s last name is Trump.

Me: Not according to his family’s historical records. Even so, I really don't care. He'll be Donald Drumpf to me till election day.

Him: It was at some point Drumpf. However, it has been and is now Trump. It is hypocritical of a liberal to be so impolite as to make fun of given names.

Me: Oh, didn't you know? I've turned conservative. It's okay now, right?

Him: Never ok to tease or bully a name.

Me: I mean, Donny does it all the time. "Crooked Hillary," "Crazy Bernie," "Lyin' Ted." But okay for him, amirite?

Him: That's a modifier, not their given names. You can put anything you want before or after it. That's your opinion, and that's cool.

Me: Okay, I think this will satisfy all the requirements. "Batshit Crazy Hypocritical Philandering Douchebag Donald TRUMP." Looks okay?

Wasn't it Donald's grandfather who changed the family name?

I've gotten into it with people here who insist on calling Andrea Mitchell Mrs. Greenspan. She is not Mrs. Greenspan. Any more than I am. Or that she's Ms. whatever her mother's maiden name was. She, and everyone else, deserved to be addressed by their actual names.

And yes, Batshit Crazy Hypocritical Philandering Douchebag Donald TRUMP is fine as far as I'm concerned. You're simply noting his less than fabulous qualities, and using his real name. Go for it.

It is never ok to refuse to use someone's chosen name. Trans individuals fight this battle all the time, often struggling to get family and friends to call them by their chosen name.

I think it's childish to engage in name calling (case in poing:, look who's engaging in it the most this election season). But name calling does not have the same implications as refusing to use someone's chosen name.

And although I can't tell whether you're serious or not, but I posted in this thread because you directly raised the question.

I haven't posted in every thread using his ancestral surname - because there isn't much point. /oo many people on DU can't/choose not to distinguish between principle and the target of their ridicule. I get enough flack for addressing trans issues in connection with Ann Coulter. Over and over again.

then it is hypocritical to do the same to our opposition.

Let the Republicans wallow in the mud bath by themselves.

His given name is "Donald". Like the duck.

I knew the difference between surnames and given names by 5th grade. I also knew what the nuclear triad was by 5th grade.

Guess who's not smarter than a 5th grader. There are two correct answers here.

whatever it WAS, his name is now TRUMP and that is what he should be called, along with all other suitable names (asshole, bully, narcissist)

but "Him" is correct - his name is TRUMP

I go by my middle name, but am often forced to respond to my first name, which I just don't care for. Things like registration, government issues, health care...it's a long list.

Socially, people tend to want to use one of the shortened versions.

Add to that my family is of German ancestry and bears the anglicized version of a couple of really rich brothers here in America.

Had never put it all together.

Anyone shaming you for that is playing silly buggers.

I actually prefer 'short fingered vulgarian' - popularized by Graydon Carter in 1988 though I will add the modifier 'orange' just so people will know which short fingered vulgarian I'm referring to.

Il Douchey is also useful.

G. W. Fucknuggets the third?

Because that's where I see a potential Trump Presidency going... Like on Day 1.

I don't have any problem with being disrespectful... Respect has to be earned.

He wants respect from me? He should start by being respectable...
