the economy takes care of private schools - many of them haven't been able to survive, including some religious schools.

If we have another super downturn more private schools will go under. Then teachers scream and run back to the government-run schools. Students too.

because they draw in a particular subset of students. The recent craze for quasi private schools, otherwise known as charter schools, is doomed to failure, in my opinion.

True private schools need a lot of funding behind them. The best of the lot have benefited from several generations of grads who give money which builds over time. What private schools charge in tuition almost always falls short of the real cost of educating their students.

Public schools are charge with educating all students, including all of the special needs students, which the private schools can politely decline. The cost per student at public schools seems to be less than the same cost at a private school, but that's because their classroom sizes are typically about double those of the private schools. And that's not counting the cost of educating the special needs kids.

I chose to send my sons to a good secular private school for reasons that were particular to them. We lived in an excellent public school district, and my choice was a very personal one. One of the things I learned by sending my kids to private school was how badly we under-finance schools. I was very unpopular at the private school because I was very vocal about my belief that I should not be exempt from penny one of school taxes, just because my kids were no longer in public school. I had a clear sense of how fortunate we were, and how incredibly important the public schools are.

The school my kids went to had been founded in 1884, and because it started out as a girls' school struggled financially for many years, and even now is probably still just holding its own. I think it's a wonderful school. I hope it will be around another hundred and fifty years. But I also think that I should pay taxes for public schools, because they are the schools that educate the vast majority of our kids.

Privatization of schools will not work. If it were not mandatory then parents would not pay and the children would stay home or get jobs. In many societies there are choices private (either company or Church run) and govt run. I think like health, education is a right and should be provided by the government.

....I don't know of any....this is why the undemocratic, unAmerican, Republican Party should be outlawed and its' leaders brought to justice....what they suggest and do to us and our country is nothing less than criminal....

....should we tolerate organized crime participating to destroy our country?

I mean if you have money go to a fine private school. If not McDonald's doesn't require much.

if the public school system continues to turn out students that can only hold jobs at McDonald's.

Outsourcing all the good jobs to foreign nations may work for a while but eventually only a few people in the United States will be able to buy all the goodies. In order to make a good profit you need a strong middle class to buy your products. Plus eventually all those people working for you in the foreign nations will insist that they get enough pay to afford to buy luxury items.
