Some of our Founding Fathers must have been stupid?

(13,200 posts)Thomas Jefferson said it even more directly in an 1814 letter to Dr, Thomas Cooper, stating that " Christianity neither is, nor ever was a part of the common law. "

I cannot vouch for its validity. I know Jefferson's comments are historical.

(13,200 posts)It was negotiated under George Washington and ratified by Congress under Adams.
I wasn't questioning the info, just trying to affirm the idea. Our founding fathers were very wary of mixing religion and government despite what the wingnuts claim.

(18,964 posts)Barry Goldwater picked up the true constitutional position...
"There is no position on which people are so immovable as their religious beliefs. There is no more powerful ally one can claim in a debate than Jesus Christ, or God, or Allah, or whatever one calls this supreme being. But like any powerful weapon, the use of God's name on one's behalf should be used sparingly. The religious factions that are growing throughout our land are not using their religious clout with wisdom. They are trying to force government leaders into following their position 100 percent. If you disagree with these religious groups on a particular moral issue, they complain, they threaten you with a loss of money or votes or both. I'm frankly sick and tired of the political preachers across this country telling me as a citizen that if I want to be a moral person, I must believe in 'A,' 'B,' 'C,' and 'D.' Just who do they think they are? And from where do they presume to claim the right to dictate their moral beliefs to me? And I am even more angry as a legislator who must endure the threats of every religious group who thinks it has some God-granted right to control my vote on every roll call in the Senate. I am warning them today: I will fight them every step of the way if they try to dictate their moral convictions to all Americans in the name of 'conservatism.' "

(35,707 posts)Born in 1909. Arizona did not become a state until 1912, so while Barry was a citizen, he was not a "natural born citizen of the U.S," following Birther logic.
For the record, of course he was a citizen and he was an Episcopalian. His mother was not Jewish which actually made Barry not Jewish I believe. Goldwater's parents were married in an Episcopal church in Phoenix; for his entire life, Goldwater was an Episcopalian, though on rare occasions he referred to himself as "Jewish".[8] While he did not often attend church, he stated that "If a man acts in a religious way, an ethical way, then he's really a religious manand it doesn't have a lot to do with how often he gets inside a church".[9][10]

(562 posts)Treaty of Tripoli has made it clear on U.S. intentions.
As the Government of the United States of America is not, in any sense, founded on the Christian religion,as it has in itself no character of enmity against the laws, religion, or tranquility, of Mussulmen [Muslims],and as the said States never entered into any war or act of hostility against any Mahometan [Muslim] nation, it is declared by the parties that no pretext arising from religious opinions shall ever produce an interruption of the harmony existing between the two countries.

(17,505 posts).... what is it specifically in our laws that is exclusively and undeniably Christian?
Laws against murder? Every country has those.
The right of citizens to vote? Do they vote in the Bible?... average citizens I mean....
Oh I know! The right to bear arms??? Ooops no "arms" in the Bible.
It's got to be freedom of religion! Unless you worship Baal...
Just what are they talking about? Y'know Sunday wasn't a day off in 1776. Not for slaves anyway...
I am hard pressed to find anything specifically Christian in our 1st laws.

(11,087 posts)Wait, that's Old Testament stuff, keepin' the Sabbath day holy, don'tcha know. You asked what was Christian.
I got it! (And you'll love this.) Some states have outlawed the death penalty. Now that's good Christianity right there. No throwin' the first stone! That's what Jesus said, ya know, when he wasn't ringin' those bells and firin' those guns to warn the Romans that a new King of Kings was in town.
