I left on a trip on Friday and blissfully was mostly without internet, TV, etc, and got back late last night and put on Morning News where the anchor (with obvious glee in his face) said that President Obama had 'the most disastrous week of his presidency' and among the highlights: 1) the weak jobs numbers 2) tightening polls with Mittens 3) a gaffe at his Friday presser and most explosively 4) a leak which compromised national security from within the administration!? (I hadn't heard about that one).
Sounds like typical News hyperbole. Am I right?

(13,200 posts)They are trying to make it into a horse race.
It's good for ratings. It's good for selling political ads and reaping a bonanza of profits. Who cares if it tips the election to a vacuous psychopath...

(31,706 posts)...the favorite game of the beltway stenographers. Every thing they think or say is of such massive proportion that any event that catches their flight attention is the biggest thing ever. That is until the next thing comes along.
As others have said, the corporate media is looking for a horse race...a bitterly contested election cause it stands to benefit many ways. Firstly...ratings (of course)...without controversy people won't watch. Next is strictly financial...there's over 2 billions dollars of ad money flying around out there and Comcast/NBC wants their piece of the action. Pissing off $1 billion of that isn't smart business...

(32,103 posts)All I can say is that if that's his "most disastrous week", he's doing alright. And, yes, it is typical News hyperbole. Consider that shortly after they said this, they had Chris Hayes and Meghan McCain on at the same time, as if McCain was somehow an equal to Chris in any way, shape, or form when it comes to discussing politics.

(1,941 posts)Especially Matt Lauer - although Ann Curry is not much better.
But what can you expect from a network that feature David "Raps-with-Rove" Gregory and Chucky Todd.
I love how whenever some political event occurs, 95% of the time, they have a rethug on to discuss the matter. The only reason that shit is on my TV is that I like the local network's news and weather. As soon as I get that, off it goes. And, I'll often switch to another channel in the interim. These assholes they have on, like Cantor, Laura Ingraham, Miss Lindsay, etc., are not welcome in my home.

(27,787 posts)The bigger issue will be Romney's statement that we don't need more teachers, firefighters or cops. The media is kind of ignoring it, but its a short statement that is easy to understand, and it will start to show up in anti-Romney ads. It fits the Romney "out of touch" framing.

(10,281 posts)what they REALLY should have said, if they were NEWS instead of ENTERTAINMENT, is as follows:
GOP sticks with plan to tank marginal recovery in order to make McConnell's dream come true,
Billions of $ vs. millions of $ in Wisconsin Governor's Recall election,
President taken out of context (mostly because we're too lazy to write the WHOLE statement),
It's more fun to quote what Slick Willie THINKS, instead of what the Pres. has promised to do.
