is a whole bunch of good guys with an expensive robot that carries a bomb to the bad guy and blows him up.
The good guys guns didn't do much of anything.

(111,480 posts)Guns make too many people feel safer than they are. A whole line of cops trained in firearm use were no match for a semiauto rifle with a 10 round magazine, which is what the news said he had. All they could do was dive for cover if they weren't dead yet.
That good guy with a gun only have a chance if the gun is out and pointing at the bad guy when he starts to shoot and that's not going to happen very often.

(6,628 posts)If they truly were "no match" for the shooter, he would still be at large and killing people. They engaged him and cornered him. If they hadn't, the whole robot ploy would not have been possible.
So why aren't all the cops dead? If what you say is true, he should have been able to kill the entire Dallas PD. After all, he "had the drop on them," right?
It's a sad irony that the police had a very subdued presence there due to the peaceful nature of the protest: they weren't all geared up with body armor, helmets, long guns, etc. This had to have been deliberate, and ordinarily would have been a very wise choice. Unfortunately, the night turned out to be anything but ordinary.

(1,339 posts)That said, legislation can stop a shit tonne of the insane regular (so depressing to call it regular) day to day killing like accidents, suicides, crimes of passion and mental illness caused escalations to lethality.

(118,965 posts)yesterday night in Dallas, who all started running away when the shooting started like all the other protesters (as well they should), that the police had reports of a dozen different shooters. Very well may have caused some more casualties with all that confusion. We were warned that a 'good guy with a gun' would just lead to more chaos and indeed it looks like it did.
