A few days ago I posted about my cousin who is a "Democratic" politician here in PA. Last week he put up a Facebook post using out-of-context data to prove that cops aren't racist. http://www.democraticunderground.com/10027992153
Well yesterday he put up another post :
It is a video of a police officer on a car stop. This officer was murdered by the driver. This video has been used in police training to show the dangers of what can happen when an officer hesitates.
This video runs through every officer's mind before an encounter. It is what they are trained to do. Race is not consciously on the officers mind. (Maybe subconsciously for some ).
When people wonder why officers give verbal warnings, or physically attempt to restrain someone to secure them, this video shows why. This video also helps the people understand why officers are trained to use deadly force when a suspect ignores those commands or resist, and when they reach for a gun... They are shot.
Training for this video highlight the opportunities this officer had to fire on the suspect when it became life threatening. If you watch the video, look for those opportunities.
This does not apply to every situation or to every police officer. But when we watch a video of an incident and cast judgement of the police for how they responded to a threat, think about this video. Put this chilling scream into your head. Think about this fear and drill it into your head.
Then cast your judgement.
Note: I am not casting judgement on any recent incidents. Most people don't have law enforcement experience, so this is my small offer to help people look through an officer's eyes.
My cousin is also a former police officer. The video he is talking about shows a police officer in a gun fight with a Vietnam vet. The officer was killed. What pisses me off about this is that he didn't seem to realize the obvious irony. One of the points people make is that we need to change the way officers are trained. By training police officers to have an image of themselves being murdered while they are pulling someone over, we are teaching them to want to blow our heads off. By showing them that they could die by hesitating to use deadly force, we are training them to shoot us first and ask questions later.

(4,532 posts)He supports Hillary and President Obama and often posts proof of climate change. He's a former police officer. That is his bias.

(79 posts)Training material of almost any type will show you both the right way, and wrong way of handling whatever topic it's covering. Unfortunately for police, in some situations, when it goes wrong, one of the potential consequences is them being killed.
It's important to learn from mistakes, especially ones that can have a fatal outcome.
