Body count rises as new Philippines president calls for drug addicts to be killed

NEWLY-INSTALLED Philippines President Rodrigo Duterte has reiterated his tough stance on crime by urging the public to not only kill drug dealers, but addicts as well.
His remarks came barely a day after he was sworn in as the country’s 16th president in Manila on Thursday, Vice reported.
Speaking to a crowd of 500 in a Manila slum, Duterte said: “If you know of any addicts, go ahead and kill them yourself as getting their parents to do it would be too painful.”
He added that, “These sons of whores are destroying our children.”

After claiming victory in the general elections in May, the former Davao city mayor said medals would be given to citizens who shot and killed drug dealers.
His words look to have been put into action since he took presidency as bodies of drug suspects piled up over the last few several days.
According to PhilStar, 18 suspected drug pushers were killed in separate incidents over the weekend, while another 952 confessed drug users and pushers, fearing for their safety, surrendered themselves to authorities in the past two days.

The latest deathtoll brought the number of drug suspects killed to 30 after Duterte was sworn in as president on June 30, PhilStar reported.

Vigilante gangs of citizens gunning down drug dealers and drug users? I'm sure they were all very bad people and totally had it coming. No sense letting any pesky due process get in the way. Thirty dead in less than two weeks. You have to believe President Trump could do better. Jesus.

Less so nowadays than in the days of Subic Bay, Cubi Point, and Angeles, but still....

Up until 1992, we recruited the very best and brightest to serve in the military (USN) from the PI--hundreds every year, tens of thousands over the course of the program. And they were a very good value--their retention rate was nearly a hundred percent, so we didn't lose a trained professional at the end of their enlistment. They were better behaved than the average sailor, too--they tended to go less crazy on liberty.

It was a path to naturalization, and an escape from lack of opportunity. Most did a full career until retirement. Many settled in southern California rather than return home to PI (save for occasional visits). The end of the basing era signaled the end of that program, which had been going on for close to a century. There probably aren't very many servicemembers recruited from PI left in service, at this point in time. There might be some 2nd generation kids following in the footsteps of their fathers (no women were recruited under that program) but those old timers are just about gone.
