(15,614 posts)The ONLY way things will change for the AA community and other minority populations is relentless, constant, continuous reminders of this situation. and education of the dominant culture.

(15,614 posts)racism is taught and institutionalized racism is hard to detect. To say the large culture knows what's going on and doesn't care is too broad of a generalization, for my point of view.

(4,940 posts)That's way too much a blanket condemnation of anyone who is white. I am, and yeah, I know what's going on, and I'm working hard in my community to educate and change the system.
I do, however, understand your frustratopm. I'd be more than bitter.

(24,654 posts)I've long since lost count of the people I've seen educated who became horrified when they were drawn out of their unique perspective and began to realize what was going on.
Trevor Noah made that point eloquently on The Daily Show when referencing the cat call video as he addressed the institutionalized racism in law enforcement. He shared a poignant and relevant personal experience of his reaction when he realized he had no clue what women endure daily on the streets.
It's much the same thing. If you're in a position of advantage, you're often blind to the reality that what you consider the normal state of being is in fact an advantage, and others don't have what you take for granted.

(20,780 posts)I must have missed the memo that appointed arresting officers judge, jury and executioner for anyone who commits these particular death penalty offenses.
And after all, a guy in street clothes with a knife can kill a fully-trained, fully-equipped law enforcement officer instantly so even if they weren't sure he'd committed the death-penalty offenses, lethal force was totally justified.
in case anyone can't figure it out...

(58,724 posts)His shooting was completely unjustified.
I just think his circumstances were different from the others on this list in several ways.

(5,861 posts)What happened to tasers and pepper spray? They only seem to use those on harmless protesters.

(58,724 posts)I just think grouping him with some of the others on the list does a disservice to them.

(45,667 posts)instant public execution is something that the colorblind folks will never experience
Meanwhile whites have pointed loaded guns at police officers, threatened them, and lived to do it again.

(58,724 posts)What happened and what continues to happen to young black males especially is a crime of the highest order that needs to be addressed immediately.
That being said, there are significant differences between the circumstances in this instance versus the others.

with Matt Taibbi who investigated the matter say that Mr Garner was not even selling cigarettes. He was just in the wrong place at the wrong time and maybe even targeted by the lead policeman.

I had also confided the stops to members of my security detail during my 13 years as King County Executive. Their advice: When stopped by police while driving, put my registration, drivers license and insurance card on the dashboard; roll down the window and keep both of my hands on the wheel. If its at night, do all of this after turning on the dome light. This is what I did earlier this year at my eighth stop.
Cayan and I drink a lot of coffee. My favorite blend comes from Peets Coffee across from Green Lake. One morning I was driving to Peets because we had run out of coffee. As I pulled up to the stoplight at Rainier Avenue South and South Dearborn Street, I saw the blue and red lights behind me. A voice over the loud speaker said I was stopped because a headlight was out.
The officer ran my plates and walked up to my car. I gave him my car registration, drivers license and insurance card. I kept saying to myself, why didnt the officer just tell me that I had a headlight out?

All this is AFTER Jamar Clark threw a firebomb into his girlfriend's house WITH HER SMALL CHILDREN INSIDE.
