(22,078 posts)Every election cycle, there are politicians who use copyright protected music without authorization. It baffles me how these candidates, a vast majority of them lawyers, could violate rights espoused in the Constitution. The courts have interpreted that intellectual property enjoys the same rights and privileges as physical property. These politicians should respect that.

(16 posts)If Musicians could jump into the discussion to tell who asks them first or pays them for the material. It would help this move from blab to policy.

(16 posts)1) Copyright has no meaning to them:
2) Plagiarism without credit or permission is a political weapon used to aggravate people.
keep adding to this.
3) There is no difference between Russian goals and their goals.
4) Ukraine has no rights and neither does anyone else in the way.

(16 posts)Borders & Languages & cultures have no meaning.
Copyrights are borders of intellectual "Property" as fences are borders between Animal Farms. Ukraine was ruthlessly invaded recently and Robbed of all of it's cultural treasures.
Without the ideas of the MASSES the #criminalRich can't think of how to spend their money. So they needed Citizens United to launder money.
We need to create clearer expectations: they do need to sue if their music is used without permission it is VERY important Make it more expensive for bullies to grab stuff.

(15,438 posts)that he can use We Are the Champions without permission?? A huge hit from a rock band whose iconic lead singer, the late but always great, Freddy Mercury, was openly and unashamedly gay while Republicans are so anti-gay they can't see straight anymore!
There are plenty of Christian rock bands. Use one of their songs for your stupid Republican get-togethers. Oh, that's right. THEY'RE BORING.

Oh well, Trump has welcomed transgendered people to use the restrooms at Trump tower but other Republicans would take issue with it.

(5,325 posts)I find the label "gay music" kinda creepy. They made music. Great music. Freddie Mercury's sexuality had nothing to do with it.

(22,457 posts)I thought if you paid ascac or bmi the fee you could use the song.
MosheFeingold
(3,051 posts)He undoubtedly paid BMI (or whomever), and it's a done deal.
Once an artist has sold its rights to a licensing group like his, there is very little they can do about who uses it, unless there is a "morals" clause in the contract.
I remember when the Beatles' "Imagine" was used to sell Coke or dishwasher detergent or the like.
Nothing to be done.

(17,396 posts)It's not like Trump is new to using music without authorization. The Rolling Stones, Neil Young, Twisted Sister, R.E.M., Steven Tyler and Adele have all had their songs played by the Trump campaign without permission.
Michael Stipe, lead singer of R.E.M., was particularly offended...
"Go f--k yourselves, the lot of youyou sad, attention-grabbing, power-hungry little men. Do not use our music or my voice for your moronic charade of a campaign.
You rock, Michael!

And seriously, the GOP glorifying a song performed by a bi-sexual man who died of AIDS? Hypocrisy?

(11,778 posts)Queen's Brian May Denies Donald Trump's Usage of 'We Are The Champions'
"I've had an avalanche of complaints some of which you can see in our 'Letters' page about Donald Trump using our 'We Are The Champions' track as his 'theme' song on USA TV," May wrote on his website. "This is not an official Queen statement, but I can confirm that permission to use the track was neither sought nor given. We are taking advice on what steps we can take to ensure this use does not continue. Regardless of our views on Mr. Trump's platform, it has always been against our policy to allow Queen music to be used as a political campaigning tool."
