NBC’s Richard Engel: RNC Manipulated Grief Of Benghazi Victim's Mother To Smear Clinton

http://mediamatters.org/video/2016/07/18/nbc-s-richard-engel-rnc-manipulated-grief-benghazi-victims-mother-smear-clinton/211666

RICHARD ENGEL: I knew Ambassador Stevens and spent some time with him in Benghazi during the war, and it was a very chaotic time. It was a time where you didn't know which militias you could trust, you were feeling a lot of support one day from a particular rebel group if you were helping them, but then if they didn't feel they were getting enough help, they might turn on you, and I think that's really what happened here. The U.S. was relying on a particular militia for security, didn't fully understand how serious the situation had become in Benghazi, Ambassador Stevens, who had been away, had just come back, was very keen to get to Benghazi, and he found himself in a situation that really he was unprepared for, the entire embassy setup there was unprepared for. So it does talk about a misunderstanding of the security situation, a misread of how dangerous Benghazi was, and then a response that whether it was perfect or imperfect has been studied time and time again, but that ultimately left an ambassador and three others killed.

But to hear this grieving mother -- and you could only sympathize with her grief -- to lay the blame directly at Hillary Clinton, saying that Hillary was responsible for her son's death, personally responsible, doesn't correspond with the facts as I know them and as I've read them in subsequent investigations, and it does seem to be a manipulation of someone’s grief and go into a very dark place.

These other stories won't get traction because of mrs trumps speech. Oh and tonight a whole new slate of speeches to discuss tomorrow. Monday night speeches were drowned out which I think is a shame. They are more important to discuss then 24-hours of mrs trumps speech. We could have heard 6 hours of mrs trumps speech and 6 hours of this racist speeches. But alas lost opportunity forever.

They use people like that to weep and wail while in the background they are pushing an agenda to curtail all the social programs, defund the EPA, sell the public lands, reduce taxes on the rich, militarize the police, start new wars in the ME.

They are desparate for this.

station that Chris Matthews was reporting from. She looks just like she had the night before, an emotional mess, and I was wondering why she was standing there. I thought she might attack him on camera so I kept watching her rather than switching back and forth like I had been doing. Eventually she walked away. I wondered why she had come back the next day. It's obvious that she's still grief striken and the Repugs are just exploiting her grief for their cause.

is that she says Clinton told her the attack was prompted by the (right-wing American evangelical, needlessly provocative) anti-muslim video that was causing riots all over the ME at the time - Egypt in particular. "the innocence of muslims", IIRC.

that's in keeping with what was reported at the time, though it wasn't confirmed. this was a time when all you had to do to start violent riots was accuse someone of burning a Koran.

then it came out that a militia leader (who's name I've forgotten, but was viewed as something of a clown in Benghazi) used the video riots as a pretext to attack the consulate. therefore, it was a "lie" by Clinton/the State Dept., instead of an honest mistake made in the confusing aftermath. as if lying isn't a legitimate tool of statecraft.

this is basically the same argument that the GOP based all the Benghazi investigations on.

that woman is letting her grief (and her politics) cloud her judgment. Engel's analysis is shouting into a gale.

Back then, the GOP convention was all about Obama's out of context "You didn't build that" line. The built almost every speech and presenter around it, and it didn't work.

It seems they haven't learned their lesson. Perhaps they should re-read that autopsy again.

...to speak at their convention (even if that wasn't in the plans). I don't want to hear about how we should take "the high road" and ignore this. People accuse the Republicans of living in the past, but Democrats have for too long been living in some fantasy world of decades ago where all you had to do is zip your lips when some ugly asinine accusations are thrown your way..because eventually everyone would see that you took the high road and so...you win! But in this day of instant superfluous information where silence is taken as acquiescence, that doesn't work. That's why Elizabeth Warren is effective at responding immediately via Twitter to Trumps ridiculous statements.

I could never imagine the pain of losing a child so I cannot began to understand what this mother is going through.

But the GOP keeps ripping open wounds before they can heal and keep prolonging her grief. Everyone handles grief differently - some channel their grief into action to change laws, some do outreach, and some get consumed by it. I think that is what is happening to this woman and the GOP loves it.

They are milking her grief, feeding into her mistaken beliefs and prolonging any type of healing.

I met someone who was friends with one of the men who died (he was in their wedding, so really close) and she would just break down every time the news came on about Benghazi - for her it was this constant reminder of his death instead of his life, and to hear it talked about and politicized really made the grief brand new again.
