Cell phone service providers.

I was looking into Pageplus, Straight Talk, Consumer Cellular…because they are so much cheaper than Verizon and AT&T.
But their coverage isn’t as widespread as Verizon and AT&T. What if you’re in Nowhere, AL/AK/….WY, and you can’t get a signal?

Or you’re trying to call someone in Nowhere, USA, and you can’t call him/her? Uh-oh….

Anybody had experience with any of the less expensive providers?

Get Sprint and be done with it

Also-

"Or you’re trying to call someone in Nowhere, USA, and you can’t call him/her? Uh-oh…."

Your provider has little to nothing to do with the called party, unless you are using the same provider
If you can't get a hold of someone in nowhere USA they need to get better service.

2. Use straight talk

It's a Carrier Customer of Verizon (Primary) and Sprint (Second Tier) so you should get fairly good service. I also hear they may also have some airspace on AT & T.

Many of the low cost Cell Phone providers operate as CLECs did in the 1990's. They purchase huge access to Major Carriers/Network providers at wholesale cost, rebrand the service, and make their money in volume as opposed to margins.

Go for it!

Straight Talk offers services on each of the four major carriers: Verizon, AT&T, Sprint, and T-Mobile. However, you should ignore all but the Verizon and AT&T offerings, since they have the best value. The Verizon coverage is better, but Straight Talk now offers a "SIM only" plan on AT&T: you buy a SIM card, stick it in your existing compatible phone, and away you go. You can even do it with an Android smartphone and get talk, text, and internet for less than $50 per month. The only catch is you already need to have an AT&T compatible phone, or you need to buy one at your own expense.

Virgin runs on the Sprint backbone.

$35 for 300 minutes, unlimited text, unlimited web
$45 for 1200 minutes, unlimited text, unlimited web
$55 for unlimited everything

and haven't had any coverage problems. It uses the Sprint network too, I believe. I was leary at first but am quite happy, especially when bill paying time comes.

Doesn't matter. If your cell phone has coverage, you can call them. Coverage only matters for getting your phone onto the network. Once it's on the network, it can call any phone number no matter where it's located.

If your carrier doesn't have coverage where you're located, one of two things happens:
1) Phone doesn't work.
2) Your phone goes into "Roaming mode" on someone else's network. This can get extremely expensive, but the actual charges depend on your provider.

Our bill went from over $300 for 3 phones to $110 for 3 phones and two of the phones have unlimited minutes, text and data.

I haven't had an issue with reception with Straighttalk, but I tried Walmart's family plan for a month and the reception was terrible. They use T-Mobile, and here in Richmond T-Mobile has very spotty coverage.

I'm a happy customer. $3 gets you up to 100 MB of data per month. Yes, the phone are costly up front, but at least the cost isn't hidden.

It's only $21.95 a month with no bells and whistles. I do not need a cell phone except for emergencies.

My phone broke almost immediately. They refused to fix it because I had purchased the inexpensive plan.

Learned my lesson. I went with a major carrier after that.
