Twitter is a hate site. It perpetuates hate by its very nature.

I'm not going to highlight the literal ISIS Twitter feeds, the ISIS supporters, the KKK, the white nationalist feeds, no, go for it. But, you sign up to Twitter, you can follow anyone, and you can reply to anyone. If you reply to someone by using the @ sign, they will see it in their feed. So, say someone hates a person. They only have to create an account, easy, and then type their hate speech @ (at) literally anyone they hate. Easy.

OK, I actually mentioned the ISIS feeds just then, I'll say, that every single one is a hate feed. And yet Twitter doesn't take them down. I don't know why. Perhaps US intelligence has a deal with Twitter to let them stay up so they can track down these vicious bastards, I don't know. But it's literally a hate site. Outside of my very small number of people I follow and who follow me (my friends), I cannot stand the crap posted on Twitter.

I read Arabic, and follow their feeds, they're pervasive and persistent. I have reported the most popular feeds dozens of times, they're still there. I literally can't read their feeds without seeing f*ing beheadings every other day. Just saw two french guys get their heads cut off (I am 100% not kidding or joking here). It sickens me.

Especially local information. But I've seen so many people "followed" and "tweeted to" who got hate speech. Leslie Jones (of recent Ghostbusters fame) got so much garbage for that movie (which actually isn't that bad, despite being a reboot). She got Milo Yiannopoulos banned for his hate speech (lawl, MRA dirty, conservative, Trump supporting shill).

But don't get me wrong, if something is happening in a town and stuff is going down, I'll hit up Twitter. But look at Trump's twitter and followers. How are none of them banned? Look at Munich shooting haters. How are none of these people banned? Sorry, I follow some rather esoteric Arabic feeds. I just think if Twitter was being truly honest to itself, it'd ban these trolls / hatemongers.

Anyone who has done a term on MIRT knows, this place is constantly playing catch up with right wing trolls.

I agree twitter should ban all accounts posting advocacy of violence, but realistically it's not like they're ever going to stop it entirely. It is a case of whack-a-mole.

And, free speech is messy, sometimes.

But man, I assure you, I've "seen some stuff" on Twitter. My post was prompted by some shit I've seen about Munich, but it goes beyond that. especially in Arabic Twitter. I agree fully in free speech. I think Twitter should either ban hate speech 100% or not, whatever, they're a corporation, they can do what they want.

But the platform is crazy. The technology is "sign up, type @ hate, press enter." It's literally the site's function.

much, in my mind.

Like, look, the whole Milo Yannonopolous (sp?) thing-- the guy clearly broke the "don't push your luck" rule (to put it in DU context) and was a rather consistent and prolific dick, but he was dancing on the other side of threats and violence.

So it makes it harder for twitter to argue that they aren't pushing an ideological agenda with something like that, especially when there ARE people out there posting violent stuff and not getting banned.

And it's hard to have an argument about "hate speech", like, here without being accused of defending obnoxious shit. Still, there are plenty of people- like, on DU- who will argue with a straight face that a cartoon of mohammed is "hate speech" and should be censored, but calling for the cartoonist who drew it to be killed--- is not.

I would imagine that if you're following the accounts you are, it's plenty fucking depressing, though.

...I've literally seen beheading videos tweeted and retweeted from legitimate Twitter accounts. Like I originally pasted, maybe it's allowed for intelligence purposes, but man, it's really getting to me. Fuck Yilo or Nero or whatever his nick was (I think it was Nero), but man... it's crazy. And I'm not totally defending Nero, but I don't recall him ever posting a BEHEADING video. Two French guys got their heads cut off yesterday or day before. I hate seeing that s**t.

IMO, you have to follow Arabic speaking Twitter to see what I am losing it over. I may delete the OP if I can't express that, but I honestly think it's a symptom of the technological platform as a whole. We see hate speech to women and AA alike, it's not just radical Islamists. ISIS just managed to be one of the things I hate the most that I've seen and it got kinda mixed into my message. My fault. We can't ignore the misogyny and racist crap on Twitter, though. Bigger picture. I wish it wasn't this way.

If you need to, take a brief break to take care of yourself.

When I traveled, I enjoyed going to zoos. Yeah, they're controversial, but I found exposure to exotic and other wildlife restorative.

When I lived in the D.C. area and was working my ass off around the clock a weekend trip to the Blue Ridge Mountains was enough to replenish my spirit. Renting a cabin in Shenandoah National Park and having deer coming up to the cabin....hiking to a waterfall with wildlife all around...

And I know that the haters may be more vocal, but there are a lot of good, good people around.

I love you, Josh. Take care of yourself.

Went to Phoenix zoo last year, spent 10 hours there (sunup to sundown). Was an amazing experience. Actually, took my mom, last "vacation" we had together (she's still kicking it not meaning "last" in the literal sense). I google mapped our little trip and I wound up pushing her 3 miles, as we circumvated the zoo. Really incredible, saw all the animals. Even the lions that the people on the trolly / bus didn't see. (Pushing her in the wheelchair I was privileged to go up to the glass windows and whatnot and saw the animals up close and personal. I have a video of me tapping the window of the chimp's habitat and they interacted with me, love that, may post it but yeah.)

Love you too, pinboy3niner, you're my favorite DUer. No teasing or whatever. We had some times here. Saw your recent comment about "drones" (Dallas shooter killing with the improvised bomb) and just wanted to virtually hug you, and come to your defense, but you argued your point eloquently and I didn't want to get my detractors on you (you know me, I have a lot of enemies around these parts). Man, 2016 has been such a year, eh?

Take care, man. I'm good.

Sorry if my OP came off too depressing, I know I love Twitter, but this past month has been brutal. All the feeds I follow and whatnot. I just hate that Twitter allows people to @ comment others so easily. It's weighed heavily on me as a technology. I've got some nasty comments on my @joshcryer account but nothing compared to what other far more innocent people get...

And while I've laid low, you've been the magnet. Sorry about that.

I'm glad you're still here as a valued member of DU. The hate and stalking is something I'll never get, and if that crap ever got really bad you'd have a ton of members here in your corner.

I think the applicable expression is, "Don't let the bastards get you down." Easy to say, right? But with all you've had to endure, I think you know by now how to get through it.

And I'd love to see your monkey video. I'm picturing the chimp making a monkey out of you.
