Jim DeMint (R-SC) to Jamie Dimon, “We can hardly sit in judgment of your losing two billion”

While Chief executive and chairman of JPMorgan Chase Jamie Dimon sat before the Senate Banking Committee this morning to discuss with lawmakers his bank’s $2 billion trading loss, DeMint shared this nugget of information; reported by TPM’s Brian Beutler, “Tea party standard bearer Sen. Jim DeMint (R-SC) wants Jamie Dimon and his peers, not Congress and regulators. to institute best practices for Wall Street. “We can hardly sit in judgment of your losing two billion,” he said.”

understand if they are afraid of losing their jobs if they do, 'cause that's what it has come down to now, without strong unions.

for all those listed except (D) Michael Bennet and (D) Mark Warner....

It is not the investments that are the problem here....but the donations to political campaigns.

the cause is not due to where they have investments. The entire congress has a conflict of interest because of campaign contributions.

I would think anyone with an investment of $100K or more should recuse themselves from the Committee. An obvious conflict of interest.

Morgan only lost 2 billion dollars. It has 2.3 Trillion in assets. Meaning they lost about one tenth of one percent. It is hardly more than a rounding error.

“Jamie Dimon’s a crook," the man yelled, as Dimon appeared unfazed. "This guy should be going to prison."

After he quieted down, Capitol police allowed the man to take his seat, as senators and spectators entered the hearing room.

Shortly thereafter, a chant erupted -- "Stop foreclosures now!" -- among some protesters, including the earlier heckler. Capitol police then removed them.

The topic of the day, of course, is not JPMorgan's loan servicing but its risk management -- and how the bank sustained a more than $2-billion loss in risky derivatives trades.

Opening statements by the panel's chairman, Sen. Tim Johnson (D-S.D.), and ranking member Sen. Richard Shelby (R-Ala.) hinted at what questions Dimon faces in the two-hour hearing.

"First, did the losses from these trades threaten the safety and soundness of JPMorgan?" Shelby said. "And second, could it happen again?"
