Just a little something I discovered. You can no longer apply for SS online or check your benefit status without a cell phone and texting capabilities. Starting August 1, you will have to log in to SS using a login, password and a security code sent to you via text from the SS office that is good for only 10 minutes. You can still go to your nearest office and call them directly, however. I guess we can thank Russia for this little inconvenience. You can verify this new information by going to the SS.gov site and reading all about it.

Yeah, that helps. Sigh....

(58,792 posts)fortunately, I don't have to interact with them much. Once you get on the program, you're pretty well set, unless you change banks or move or something.

Even those with cell phones don't have the capability of receiving text messages.

(5,273 posts)My online bank has a great new security measure- when I complete my request for an online transaction, my home phone rings and when I pick up, an automated voice says my security code which I enter online. Simple and easy. Any phone number, cell or landline will work. Surprised Soc Sec isn't using this method instead of requiring text messaging as so many of us seniors do not use texting yet and even if we have a cellphone, keep it turned off most of time and only use for emergencies or in our cars.
