The bleak assessment came on the eve of an important weekend that will see elections in Greece and France and a key G20 meeting of world leaders in Mexico.
"Europe must discuss the growing differences in economic strength between France and Germany," she said.
Tensions are running so high that Jean-Marc Ayrault, the French prime minister, was forced to deny that Paris had broken off the Franco-German partnership, following Berlin anger at a Franco-Italian summit in Rome on Thursday.
There was a growing sense of crisis in European capitals after David Cameron, the Prime Minister, took part in a tense conference call with Mrs Merkel, Mr Hollande and Mario Monti, the Italian prime minister.

(62,325 posts)but her neo-liberal buddy, Sarkozy never much cared what the people wanted. He served his masters well and will be richly rewarded.
They've had years to 'fix' the mess their bankster friends created and things get worse each time they announce yet another bailout.
When is someone going to stop them I wonder, before Europe is completely destroyed?
Blaming the Greek taxpayers was a ploy, which sadly all too many people were willing to buy. Now it's the Spanish people, another bailout, over $100 billion this time, but it's not enough and I guess the Spanish people were lazy, no good wasters also.
Now it's on to the French, I guess it's their fault too. It's everyone's fault BUT the main culprits who Brussels keeps trying to rescue.
Amazing how many millions of lazy bums there were in the world all this time.
What they need to do they will not do until every last Goldman Sachs technocrat is ousted from any position of power in Europe.
Where does the money go? Bailing out banks now for how many years, and each day things get worse. Soon people are going to start dying, in EUROPE, of the cold in winter, from starvation. Already people are planning to send their elderly relatives out of the big cities to family, if they have that option, in rural areas where they can grow their own food.
Jail is too good for the greedy, corrupt Wall Street gamblers who caused this massive disaster.

(62,325 posts)I just can't believe what we are watching here, though and how little the news media here covers it. It is a disaster of mammoth proportions and to think that it is in the hands of the people who created the mess, it's no wonder nothing is getting better.
The reason seems so clear to me. They are focused on one goal, save the Wealthy no matter what it costs the people. And they are too stupid to realize that if they stimulated the economies, they would have a better chance of survival themselves.
I think Merkel misses her old neo-liberal partner, Sarkozy.
It's way past time for the rest of Europe to do what Iceland did. The proof is in the pudding, what they keep doing, over and over again, has been a spectacular failure.
New management is needed and maybe some arrests and confiscation of money earned through corruption, that is obviously hidden in safe offshore havens.
Because the money didn't disappear, so where did it go? Where are they hoarding it? I guess no one is looking as the rule of law just doesn't apply to these monsters.
Anyhow, thanks for your comment, good to see you

(62,325 posts)Too bad everyone didn't follow Iceland's example. At least a few crooked politicians and bankers would have been held accountable for the Global disaster they created, instead of trying to make the people pay their gambling debts.
They are not giving 'their money' away as a gift. They are trying to save the Banks and in return they are destroying millions of lives, squeezing every last dime they can out of the working class, while at the same time, making the years-long wet dream of the neo liberals come true by finally getting to destroy Europe's social programs AND depress wages, creating more cheap labor for the top 1%.
It's Shock Doctrine again, only this time in what used to be the First World.
