'Gayest' Neighborhoods: Most Gay And Lesbian Friendly Zip Codes Ranked By Trulia

I'm shocked! Rehobeth Beach, DE made the list and yet there aren't any neighborhoods from NYC.

Go figure.

America's 'Gayest' Neighborhoods: Most Gay And Lesbian Friendly Zip Codes Ranked By Trulia

Residents in San Francisco, Provincetown and Delaware's Rebobeth Beach have an extra-special reason to celebrate this LGBT Pride month, as zip codes within those cities have been named as some of the most gay and lesbian neighborhoods in the country.

In a new poll published by online real estate sales site Trulia, economist Jed Kolko used data from the 2010 U.S. Census to determine the nation's most gay-friendly neighborhoods, naming the top 10 areas with the highest concentration of same-sex male couples, and doing the same for female.

San Francisco's Castro district ranked high on both lists, topping the list for gay male couples and coming in tenth for lesbian couples. Similarly, Provincetown came in on top for women and third for men. Still, there were some interesting surprises -- at least to those not familiar with more suburban areas -- along the way.

but Ferndale (one of the cities surrounding Detroit) is known for being gay friendly. They even elected an openly gay mayor.

But Detroit is in a huge state of flux. The population of the city has drastically shrunk, and plans are underway to shrink the size of the city as well (much needed IMO). In recent years, it has drawn a small but eclectic community of young artists, urban farmers, and even some professionals. There are seeds of hope, though the present and the near term future will still be difficult (the city is also coping with a massive deficit and is on the verge of a state takeover).

Other than that small enclave of young "hipsters" (who likely hold liberal views on gay and lesbian rights), I'd be a bit surprised if the majority there share the same views. The city is largely African American, and while they vote Democratic, I sense some uneasiness on LGBT rights (but I think since Obama's recent endorsement of gay marriage, views may be changing).

...... and your musings on African Americans and LGBT rights aside, Pleasant Ridge is not even close to being largely African American.

Not surprised at that. Guerneville and the surrounding areas of the Russian River have many, many gay residents, and it's a gay tourist destination as well.

We're an official hate-free area.

We are up there so often that the guys at Sophie's Cellar in Monte Rio always try to give us the locals discount!

My zip code is #1 for gay men.

We lived outside of DC, and as a family vacationed from Rehoboth to Myrtle Beach. I'm now in NC with beautiful beaches, but there's just something about that village feel to Rehoboth -- the funky shops, restaurants, music, walkability...

Two stories about Provincetown. Back in the early '90's I took my then 13 year old niece on vacation throughout New England. The night before our trip to Provincetown, I asked my niece, if her parents had explained to her about gays. She said, yes and when I asked her to explain, she gave me a 13 year old's answer of "they're men who love men and women who love women, like my mom and dad love each other." Good definition, and I wouldn't have to explain to her, why she saw men holding hands and kissing. Which we did see.

My Dad was a Marine Corps recruiter in the '50's his area was all of Cape Cod. He told me he never got a recruit out of Provincetown, everyone who lived there was too "bohemian" to join the Corps.

Sad story my Mom tells about one of Dad's recruits. The young man was 18, his parents were very angry that he enlisted in the Corps, they didn't want to talk to him. They of course would not see him off on the bus that would take him to Parris Island. My Mom and Dad drove him to the bus to see him off. My Mom even packed food for him for the trip.

Beach replenishment and Sea Grass has taken hold. There is no more under the boardwalk, as sand has taken its space.

I still go to Rehoboth but it isn't the same. More crime and not really gay friendly. More like gay dollars are tolerated. Sussex County, Delaware is Red State territory.

Delaware tries to be cosmopolitan but never quite makes it because of Sussex county where Rehoboth is located. Three hours from New York City but we just got Civil Unions and are 5 years away from gay marriage (if we are lucky).

I say bad survey or I have a poor idea of a gay friendly state.
