I can't get over what happened at the Montana Republican Party Convention

over the weekend. I just can't. It has to be the most vile expression of contempt and hate for a President ever.

An outhouse, riddled with holes, labeled "The Obama Presidential Library", with a copy of his birth certificate posted and stamped with the word bullshit, not to mention this gem "fake phone numbers for Michelle Obama, Hillary Clinton and Nancy Pelosi “For a Good Time.”

I don't want to let it go. This wasn't just some unofficial tea party gathering. This was the Montana Republican Convention. And we should be making a big stink about it.

Yes, Montana republicans are trying to wriggle their way out of this, but there is no way this disgusting display could have been erected without the knowledge of officials.

Seriously, can you imagine doing this at your place of work, against your co-workers? Putting a portapotty out front with your boss' name on it and graffiti scrawls suggesting Cindy down in HR and Carl in marketing are prostitutes? And then bragging about it?

No. Of course not. Your ass would be out the door faster than you can say "defamation suit," and you would spend the rest of your professional life hoping no one ever asked that employer about you.

Have you seen the email going around, suggesting that Michelle Obama is Cheeta, all grown up?

The text is

I was at the Church yesterday, and I ran into Tarzan! I asked him how it was going and if he was making anymore movies. He told me, "me no longer make Movies, me have severe Arthritis, both shoulders And not swing from vine to Tree". I asked how Jane was doing? He told me, "Jane in bad shape, in nursing home, has Alzheimer's and not recognizes anyone". How sad! I asked about Boy, and he told me "Boy, gone big city, Get with bad women, on drugs and alcoholic; And Only time hear from him, when in trouble or need something".
I asked about Cheeta: he beamed and said, "Cheeta do good. She marry lawyer, had plastic surgery, now live in White House!!!

and there are stills from old Johnny Weissmuller Tarzan films, with the last still of Cheeta beside a picture of Michelle Obama.

(I told the person who sent this email that I do not ever want to see another disgusting, disrespectful racist email. Thus far, she has not sent any others...)

Wed Jun 20, 2012, 07:51 AM
Jun 2012

The glue that holds the modern GOP together is racism and sexism. They constantly deny their proclivities but they can not hide their true feelings for long. The GOP is a group of white men in power who are desperately trying to hang on to a pre-1960s world. They are angry as hell at the prospect of a loss of privilege.

As a white, southern male I have access to the quiet whispers from these guys. You'd be amazed at what they say in private. Rest assured that there are many caucasian males who don't agree with them and actively call them out, but a large number of my demographic are racist and sexist assholes. I attribute this to a fear of loss of privilege.

Let's keep fighting the good fight, calling out assholes when we see them, and point fingers at the foolishness that will be displayed with greater frequency as we get closer to November.

Words which when uttered whip them into an orgasmic frenzy of misplaced anger and outright lies hammered into them by the corporate interests truly guiding this nations direction. It is after all only about money for them. There is no fellowship, no stewardship, no love or celebration of the founding principles or fathers or children of this country. He is 60 years old and was first diagnosed with Parkinsons 15 years ago. He has two masters degrees and a Ph.D. from Cornell. He taught at the University of Michigan and worked as a nuclear engineer.

Bob was able to have a $150,000 surgery that greatly increased his quality of life, thanks to Medicare and the Cleveland Clinic. He attended the event in Columbus because he believes in giving back and thinks everyone should have access to affordable health insurance and quality health care.

because i happened to be with a black woman. we were not kicked out but we were ignored for nearly an hour while others came and went.
earlier, with my japanese wife, i traveled to billings, mt. to read my thesis at a medieval history convention and we were followed and leered at by big guys in pick-up trucks, (guns in the racks) who made it clear we should not feel comfortable in their town.
this display does not surprise me but it does sadden, sicken, and frighten me.

70. That whirring sound you hear is Jeannette Rankin, spining in her grave.

Wow, Montana has sunk rather low--this is pretty ghastly, even by GOP standards.

Say, did they put Rep. Rankin's name and pic on the outhouse wall? She was a Republican, but she was one of those "progressive" ones--so that would surely make her an enemy of the Toilet Paper Bunch?

Representative, 1917–1919, Republican from Montana
Representative, 1941–1943, Republican from Montana

Jeannette Rankin’s life was filled with extraordinary achievements: she was the first woman elected to Congress, one of the few suffragists elected to Congress, and the only Member of Congress to vote against U.S. participation in both World War I and World War II. “I may be the first woman member of Congress,” she observed upon her election in 1916. “But I won’t be the last.”1

Jeannette Rankin, the eldest daughter of a rancher and a schoolteacher, was born near Missoula, Montana, on June 11, 1880. She graduated from Montana State University (now the University of Montana) in 1902 and attended the New York School of Philanthropy (later the Columbia University School of Social Work). After a brief period as a social worker in Spokane, Washington, Rankin entered the University of Washington in Seattle. It was there that she joined the woman suffrage movement, a campaign that achieved its goal in Washington State in 1910. Rankin became a professional lobbyist for the National American Woman Suffrage Association (NAWSA). Her speaking and organizing efforts helped Montana women gain the vote in 1914.

When Rankin decided in 1916 to run for a House seat from Montana, she had two key advantages: her reputation as a suffragist and her politically well-connected brother, Wellington, who financed her campaign. Some national woman suffrage leaders feared she would lose and hurt the cause. The novelty of a woman running for Congress, however, helped Rankin secure a GOP nomination for one of Montana’s two At-Large House seats on August 29, 1916.2 Rankin ran as a progressive, pledging to work for a constitutional woman suffrage amendment and emphasizing social welfare issues. Long a committed pacifist, she did not shy away from letting voters know how she felt about possible U.S. participation in the European war that had been raging for two years: “If they are going to have war, they ought to take the old men and leave the young to propagate the race.”3 Rankin came in second, winning one of Montana’s seats. She trailed the frontrunner, Democratic Representative John M. Evans, by 7,600 votes, but she topped the next candidate— another Democrat–by 6,000 votes. Rankin ran a nonpartisan campaign in a Democratic state during a period of national hostility toward parties in general. And this was the first opportunity for Montana women to vote in a federal election. “I am deeply conscious of the responsibility resting upon me,” read her public victory statement.4

71. FWIW, MT GOP is now claiming the AP report is not 100% accurate

by Montana Republican Party on Monday, June 18, 2012 at 9:48am ·

Over the weekend, an Associated Press headline falsely reported that the Montana Republican Party "displayed" an outhouse with various offensive statements about the President and his family.

Unlike the headline, the body of the story correctly reported that the display was placed there by parties unknown to us. The body of the story correctly reported that the Party Chairman condemned that display the very moment he heard of it, and called on people to respect the President. The body of the AP's story correctly reported that the person responsible for the display could not be determined, and that the party chairman repudiated it.

The AP story failed to report the fact that Montana Republicans had the display removed from the hotel property where our convention was being held.

Montana Republican Party Chairman Will Deschamps said, "I repudiated this display the moment I was made aware of it. I said at the time that the display was in very poor taste, and that we should respect the President. I only wish the headline had not misreported that fact."

Many news organizations falsely reported the headline "Montana GOP displays" when the AP story actually reported that the Montana Republican Party did not display the outhouse, the person responsible for displaying it could not be determined, and it had been seen before at a function completely unconnected to the Montana GOP.

The Montana Republican Party has already begun discussions with the Associated Press about whether it's possible to correct this situation of misinformation.
