Robert Reich to progressives: we cannot allow ourselves to be lulled into either complacency or cynicism
Posted on June 20, 2012
I think the cost of a Romney administration is so huge, even if it would generate more public outrage, that I would say, lets all get behind Obama for a second term; lets make sure
we have a Democratic Congress; but lets understand thats just the beginning of our task. Weve got to make them move in a progressive direction. Its just like 1936, when Franklin D. Roosevelt was running for re-election and somebody said to him, Mr. President, if youre re-elected, I want you to do this and this and this and this. And he said, Maam, I want to do all these things, but if I am re-elected, you must make me do them. This is what Democracy Now! is all about. Democracy is a practice. Its a living form of ongoing citizen engagement. And we cannot allow ourselves to be lulled into either complacency or cynicism.

(28,017 posts)It is bad enough that we have to fight a united GOP, currently run by truly out of touch tea baggers and neocons. But, when we STILL have to battle Blue Dog Democrats, then I begin to wonder why we even bother. At least we don't have Rahm pissing on our backs, and telling us IT'S FUCKING RAINING, or a Bill Daley stabbing us in our still dripping wet backs. And it does seem as though the president finally has some fight in him, instead of beating the compromise drum to death.

(1,197 posts)It's not as though progressives haven't been writing, calling, making their wishes known. Maybe the President's fight has begun a bit too late. These Republicans today and those who vote for them are not interested in Democracy. They are not interested in making the government work. They hate the government. I have never understood why anyone would elect someone to government office who hates the government and deems it a ridiculous entity. Private business would never hire someone who hated their company/corporation and thought it was a nonsensical business. Our country is in deep trouble as long as such people are in office. Work to vote them OUT of office, then stay connected and pester those elected. When citizens ignore their government, and/or don't know how their goverment works, when they fall victim to the idea that nothing they do matters, this is what happens.

(52,589 posts)not to mention crazy state legislatures. A Romney presidency would just make sure all life jackets and boats would be burned.

(52,589 posts)with gerrymandered House Districts and Senate Democrats about as useful as a boat with a leak, we're not getting out of this anytime soon. Take into account this Supreme Court and Citizens United, a movement at this point is what is needed. The downside is the time it takes, but it may serve future generations well. In the meantime, we will vote even if our voting has less power. It is one thing we can do in the short term to stem the corporate tide.
