Yesterday we heard a Republican state that Voter ID laws were meant to guarantee Pennsylvania for Romney.
Well, I caught something in an OP that I missed on the news. Rick Scott (FL Gov) who panders to the Republicans, apparently won't force E-verify in Florida, which means the policy of turning a blind eye continues. Not that I oppose this, but I think it's important to point out that Republicans talk out of their ass. It's not about ideology, it's about being as fluid as water to get around the laws in order to stay on top and make money.
Illegal immigrants have a strong new ally in Florida: the governor.
Rick Scott recently made that clear when he promised agriculture interests that he'd allow them to continue hiring illegal workers.
Technically, Scott didn't grant them a pardon. But he may as well have. He announced that he has abandoned his promise to force Florida companies to use E-Verify the federal database that helps companies determine whether they are making legal hires.
This is more than just a flip-flop. It means Scott lied.

(46,786 posts)Republican politicians always talk tough on cracking down on illegal immigrants, but only come election time. The rest of the time the do nothing at all because the companies that donate the money want an "illegal" work force because like you stated, they like to pay the low wages. If there were a "real" immigration plan, one to get people who really want to work the chance to get work permits and become legal workers, then those same companies would not be able to pay lower wages simply because the know the illegals will work cheaper, and if there are problems they won't go to the authorities because they are here "illegally".
The problem is, as has been stated already, the average republican voter just can't seem to see this. They "think" republicans are going to "fix" the problem, the talk tough, so these uniformed people voter for them and yet nothing ever happens. Same thing with all the other "wedge" issues republicans use to get their base all worked up, it's all talk and not action, yet these people just keep voting for them over and over and over. That doesn't say much for the republican base, now does it!

As the nation's attention turns back to the fractured debate over immigration, it might be helpful to remember that in 1986, Ronald Reagan signed a sweeping immigration reform bill into law. It was sold as a crackdown: There would be tighter security at the Mexican border, and employers would face strict penalties for hiring undocumented workers.
<snip>
The law granted amnesty to nearly 3 million illegal immigrants, yet was largely considered unsuccessful because the strict sanctions on employers were stripped out of the bill for passage.
