(29,036 posts)Had the Federal Gov. been able to fight the fire with their giant tankers they might have stopped it before it really got out of control. Hard to say with all the drought and high winds though. Almost nothing can stop a fire under those conditions.

(154,021 posts)the way that fire goes, until the local and state government exhausts resources the FEDS cannot get involved... it has to do with Posse Comitatus to be precise. And that only goes for the MILITARY... the Federal Fire Service IS involved up to it's neck already.
Translation, this means deploying C-130s
Now the GOVERNOR, could very well mobilize his Guard elements, some of which may even have a C-130 or two

Our governor has been ON it. He's coordinated with neighboring governors for their Nat. Guard resources as well as our own and was instrumental in getting a level 1 incident management team into Ft. Collins within days of the fire and they were critical in getting those retardant plane assets from Canada, since ours are in short supply. Further, he has managed to get the DOD to start converting their available air assets to the task as well.
Say what you will for Hickenlooper. It appears he is doing a very good job as the Governor on this whole disaster. And, I see no reason to complain as yet on the Federal response as well.

(102,577 posts)Federal forest service resources) before additional Federal or Guard or military resources are provided. But, this is fairly continuous and almost done in parallel now that there are 10 major fires in Colorado. It isn't as though they sit around with no response waiting for Federal/DOD/Guard assets to be deployed. Once an assessment that local and state resources are inadequate for control/containment, steps are taken to move Federal resources into place. The state's emergency management group and governor's office are in continuous contact with Federal and cross-state authorities to ensure those resources are provided. The largest of the fires, that outside Fort Collins has had a level one FEDERAL incident management team in place and ensuring all necessary resources are provided since day 2 of the fire.
This is also how FEMA requests work for hurricanes and other natural disasters, but again, because the risk for additional fires is so high, the FEDS and DOD resources are not being delayed. Daily the FEDS are reevaluating the situation, not only in Colorado and New Mexico, but throughout the west and pre-planning deployment of these resources.
And no, the fire departments locally in COlorado Springs as well as in the other fire areas are NOT private companies. They are tax-payer supported local departments, despite the RW anti-tax policies.

(562 posts)They get EXACTLY what they want. While I wish NOTHING but the best to those who are affected, but the Republicans have now overplayed their one pair of twos in terms of poker, and left it wide open for everyone to see - and now it's beginning to AFFECT them.
I was just looking at one "privatized" fire department in Grants Pass, Oregon on Youtube.
The compentency of the fire department was unmeasurably stupid.
