The Kansas State Board of Healing Arts should read up on Hippocrates and his oath: "First, do no harm."

The Kansas State Board of Healing Arts, the governing body that regulates the practice of medicine in the state, stripped the medical license of a woman who refused to force a mentally-ill 10 year old to give birth.
As Robin Marty reports, Dr. Ann Neuhaus became the target of domestic terror group Operation Rescue after her colleague, Dr. George Tiller, was murdered. Neuhaus assisted Tiller by providing second opinions for mental health exceptions for late-term abortions.
Operation Rescue filed a negligence complaint against Neuhaus alleging that her exams were not thorough enough to support her medical conclusions and her follow-up care was inadequate because she did not recommend counseling or hospitalization after each procedure.
Neuhaus offered a rebuttal of her own. To even claim that isnt medically necessary qualifies as gross incompetence, said Neuhaus. Someones 10 years old, and they were raped by their uncle and they understand that theyve got a baby growing in their stomach and they dont want that. Youre going to send this girl for a brain scan and some blood work and put her in a hospital?
Like other states Kansas has made recent attempts to stack their medical review board with anti-choice advocates like former Operation Rescue attorney Richard Macias. When hearing the case against Dr. Neuhaus, the board offered up their own expert to determine if any breach of the standard of care occurred. Not surprisingly, the witnessed insisted that in no cases is abortion a treatment that could be seen as beneficial to a patients mental health, further clouding the waters as to the kind of care girls and women can expect in the state of Kansas.
Nuehaus will appeal the ruling. If she loses she will have her license permanently revoked.

(3,231 posts)Crazy - I guess the people of Kansas have spoken - they want to live this way by voting these people into office to rule their lives, let them - sane women need to get out to save themselves.

(25,699 posts)Not too long ago I was trolling around a right-wing shithole, and decided to make the point that banning abortion even in case of rape or incest just means that the GOP is advocating the the right of a rapist or pedophile to "own" their victim.
Here we have a teen year old child, raped by her uncle and pregnant. Good fucking god. And the only reaction by the government of the state is to declare the doctor who is literally saving her life a criminal.

(292 posts)The phrase "preaching to the choir" comes to mind (introduced to my head at Christian youth group). Everyone on this site is of... vaguely similar.... um... all probably going to vote for the same person. I can only imaging the heaping plate of welcome they served you. It would be interesting to organize an outreach program.
Say, If you go somewhere like that again, let me know. We can tag team that shit.
Any sites in particular?

(3,596 posts)We must separate medical treatment from religious nuttery. The physician did what, in her professional opinion, was the correct course of treatment for this patient. In my view, based on the limited facts, she was correct.
But what prevents us in future of having a doctor recommend against further cancer treatments because he/she knows the treatment will be very painful for the patient, costly and only provide a small opportunity for an extension or quality of life. The doctor is going to be charged in the same manner.
We cannot have religious beliefs interfering with the conduct of the practice of medicine in this country. Physicians must be free to take decisions and make recommendations on their qualified MEDICAL expertise, not their religious beliefs. A patient should always be free to decide otherwise. But the doctor cannot be held accountable for performing a procedure or recommending a course of treatment that is generally recognized as valid.

(51,824 posts)Every member of the Kansas medical board should be indicted for child abuse. And any doctor who forces a 10-year-old to give birth by refusing to perform an abortion the child requests should lose their license, not the other way around.
This is an outrage, right up there with that hideous Islamic Penal Code that forces women and even young girls to marry their rapists. The Right really are the American Taliban.

(879 posts)Her doctor said she should go into spontaneous labor within 48 hours, if not, the doctor would have to intervene. Labor didn't start and the closest facility which could safely perfrom the procedure was a Planned Parenthood clinic. However, the walk into the clinic was the worst experience. Some jackass protester stopped Risa and said "You are going in there to kill your baby." Already emotional she screamed "My baby is already dead. These people are going to save my life." She said you could hear a pin drop and the protesters blocking the door stepped silently out of her way. The clinic allowed her doctor to be there with her as she felt more comfortable with him there, provided a private room for the family to grieve, and provided her with a counselor to help her through the entire experience. They even allowed her to leave by a back entrance so she would not have to face the protesters again.

(1,944 posts)the rightie said that if his wife was ever raped he would force her to carry the child full term and they would bring up that child.
But this guy was so openly racist, nasty and mean about anyone who wasn't a white male - if his wife was raped by anyone not of the white heritage - I have no doubt at all that they would be waiting at the clinic for the doors to open.

(879 posts)was mentally ill and as an adult, had the mental age of 9. I was very young when she was raped by a "friend" at the age of 15. The family went against doctors advice and allowed her to give birth. Twenty years later she still walked around the house asking everyone where she had left her baby. The memory brings tears to my eyes. I wish she had had a Dr. Ann Neuhaus fighting for her. My grandmother (her mother) has Alzheimers but I sometimes wonder if she remembers hurting Claudia that much.

The day is fast approaching to choose a side to be on, I stand on the side of the 99%. This is a direct assault on women's RIGHTS, just as all of our RIGHTS are being assaulted from every angle. How long will WE kneel for them?
