BERLIN - Jewish and Muslim groups protested on Wednesday after a German court banned the circumcision of young boys for religious reasons, Reuters reported. The ban applies to the Cologne region of Germany.
The court in the western city of Cologne handed down the decision on Tuesday in the case of a doctor who was prosecuted for circumcising a four-year-old Muslim boy.

The court ruled that involuntary religious circumcision should be made illegal because it could inflict serious bodily harm on people who had not consented to it. Male circumcision is part of Jewish and Muslim religious tradition.
The ruling said boys who consciously decided to be circumcised could have the operation. No age restriction was given, or any more specific details.

(115,108 posts)It's incredible that here in the US we have banned even a ritual nick on infant girls' clitoral hoods yet full circumcisions of infant boys are still somehow acceptable.

(14,337 posts)and me too. This was routinely done back when we were babies in the 40s. Do you know that the Nazi used this to determine who was Jewish or not? They had major problems with AMERICANS then because the majority were circumcised, regardless of their religion.
When I did medical claims for a corporation, I knew a coworker who had to have a medical circumcision done in his 30s. Poor guy. His recuperation was worse than my husband's for his vasectomy. That man was razzed really bad. Better to have it done as an INFANT, than in your 30s. I personally feel it should be left up to the PARENTS, not the government. I feel the same for vacs, meds, abortion, BC, of their children also. You don't like it? Then don't do it for your own children, but don't impose your views on other parents.

(23,272 posts)that person, when they are an adult, not family. And especially not for religious mumbo jumbo - that's even more grotesque imho. Nobody should get any part of their anatomy whacked for a religious ritual until they can decide for themselves if they want it done.

(3,829 posts)It reduces sexual enjoyment and changes the mechanics of sex. Parents have no right to do that to their kids. It's child (and latter adult due to worse sex life) abuse.
