I wanted to do a different kind of portrait. One that captures a very real thing he does quite spontaneously. I really love to see him smile and laugh. He's got great teeth too!

I've done the small version, but I want to make a 4 foot by 4 foot canvas of it. I use canvas that's as smooth as I can get and apply the paint in layers so there are no brushstrokes and the paint is all uniformly smooth so you can't even feel a ridge or divide between the black and white shapes. It takes a while because of applying many, many layers so the colors are solid opaque shapes with very sharp edges.

The thing is I paint both colors and not just black on a white background. So it takes me a long time because there are lots and lots of edges where I have to be very careful and have a steady hand, but I really like the way it turns out. And I use the large format so the painting looks just as clear and recognizable far away as it does close up.
