GOP Votes for Contempt as "Fast and Furious" Blows Up in Its Face

The "Fast and Furious" imbroglio may have just gone sideways on House Republicans. Just prior to them leading a House vote for contempt against Attorney General Eric Holder on Thursday, a far-reaching investigation published by Fortune magazine poked major holes in the conservative storyline about the alleged gun operation. Claims that law enforcement engaged in a deadly plot to let Mexican outlaws smuggle US guns, the magazine reports, are based on allegations by a lone whistleblower who may in fact be the only person who did any illegal gun-smuggling. The real cause of violence and crime south of the border, it reports, is lax gun laws in Arizona and elsewhere pushed by Republicans and their friends at the National Rifle Association....

According to Fortune, though, almost everything about the story that Republicans have been flogging is wrong. And the magazine makes the case that the GOP's allegations against Holder and the Obama administration aren't just inaccurate—rather, they distract from the possibility that GOP's politics are actually to blame for the deluge of three-quarters of a million American guns per year into Mexico. "Republicans who support the National Rifle Association and its attempts to weaken gun laws are lambasting ATF agents for not seizing enough weapons—ones that, in this case, prosecutors deemed to be legal," the report states....

* ATF agents did not recruit anyone to buy weapons and pass them to criminals, with a single exception: John Dodson, the renegade agent who allegedly blew the whistle on the "Fast & Furious" operation. Against Voth's express instructions, Dodson—who according to Fortune's account was a seemingly insubordinate, slapdash former narcotics cop from Virginia that even his ex-partner describes as "an asshole"—"used $2,500 in ATF funds to purchase six AK Draco pistols from local gun dealers," then passed them on to a suspected gun trafficker, then...went on vacation.

Most of 'Papers Please' struck down, and the rest left open for a suit.

Obamacare confirmed "CONSTITUTIONAL"

Voting Holder in Contempt ONE DAY after a Fortune article proving the whole F&F contrived 'scandal' is bullshit.

Poor little things. I almost feel sorry for them. If they weren't such a gang of criminals I probably would.

Its the only time I really yell at the television.

Loved Holder's response to the farce.

but i doubt the republicans will care.

Stories linking gun violence in mexico to lax American gun laws have been in the news for years. On TV and Print and the internets.

The right simply refuses to believe.

And it's not as if this is the only example.

How did those investigations clearing Acorn of wrong doing go?

On a related note, my step kid a 'student' of alex jones, just regailed me with the right wing nutter story of how Fast and Furious is a conspiracy against our second amendment rights.
Supposedly alex jones (accdg to stepkid) is the only one on the radio telling his listeners the truth. Imo, he is a paid shill for the corporatists who seek to replace progressives as well as President Obama.

fantasy flights like this don't help the cause. Of course they lied, of course the contempt vote was 100% political. This is the behavior that gets Repukes MORe votes, not less.

The Fortune article debunking the whole FF nonsense came out THE DAY BEFORE the vote. The House Republicans had time to read it, but no real time to change their strategy. So they voted Holder in contempt, but don't have the option of saying "well I didn't SEE the Fortune article until AFTER I voted!"

On the other hand, the one day time frame probably had the opposite effect on Democrats. It gave them the final push needed to tell the NRA to fuck off, and either vote NO or WALK OUT in protest.

The timing of the article couldn't have been better if it had been crafted by Plouffe.

He did not even have to investigate himself but then he would not be able to excite the gin nuts and money would not pour into GOP and NRA. They need to be shown for the lies they produce. The family needs to know the truth, failures of Maricopa county to take action all plays into sheriff Joe to try to make a mountain out of nothing because the DOJ is investigating.

Or cover-up? Someone is involved but they turn the tables on Obama and release just enough to implicate others while Dems won't reveal the bits that show the Republicans evidence isn't the whole story.

Will continue searching for the list of congressmen who voted in contempt unless someone knows a link for me - thanks!

That's just awesome! So sweet. At what point do we consider them not a Democrat and therefore can care less if they win or lose in November?

I've had many people say I should still support him and help him win AGAIN because a Republican would be worse. Tell me how? He wined and dined progressives in '08, we were sure we had someone of quality on our side, he kept saying he, too, was tired of people who played politics in office. Now he's put the NRA and their support/money/his campaign over doing what's right. I don't see how he's of any benefit to our district.

but they stepped down. I almost had a sense that folks (Democratic Powers that Be) advised them not to run, the old 'he's better than a Republican' line maybe? The only way I can imagine they think he's a benefit is just the psychological factor of the number of Dems versus R's in congress?

It is a hard place to be, I want a walker! I want a real Democrat in Congress, no I want the Democrat I volunteered 15+ hours a day to keep his promises.

For the people who say that a Dem in the seat is a psychological benefit for Obama didn't see this one coming I guess. This stabbing in the back will only be a negative for Obama in NC in November. Maybe if he was a quiet conservative Democratic I could see it, but this kind of betrayal after Obama campaigned with him is hideous.
