Maybe even Breyer? Should Mittens win in November and Ginsburg or Breyer pass away during his term, he could through the SCOTUS firmly into the conservative camp and you would rarely see another progressive decision come out of the court. If Obama is given the chance now, he could put another one or two younger justices in that might keep things more on an even keel for the foreseeable future.
Thoughts?

it would definitely be construed as a ploy to stack the court. The RWers would make hay off of it. It would spur voter turnout on the right, which I consider a bad thing.
It could also be seen as a sign of weakness in the confidence of the admin about their re-election chances.
So, I have to say I don't support the idea.

(24,331 posts)What we need to focus on is not the liberals, but the conservatives on the court. The second one of them dies off, it's the chance to change the balance of the court for the next 20+ years.

He won't be trying to install Dennis Kucinich's clones on the Supreme Court. Not even close. That's what I would like to see; I don't know about you.
What we'll get from Obama is center-right. Someone brought up as a 'compromise' to the Repigs, who will fit the Corporate bill just fine even without being a complete mouthbreather. To think otherwise is to be delusional.
Given all of this, I submit that in the end it won't make all that much of a difference who installs the next two justices.
This country is headed in one and only one direction, regardless of whether we take the 'Scenic Route' every now and then.

But IMHO the Obama record speaks for itself, and the more I know about it, the less thrilled I am with it.
Where the FUCK do you get 'TeaBagger'? I'm a hardcore liberal, I support all kinds of Socialist policies, like what exists in Europe or hell, even Canada.
Drug legalization, check.
More worker protections, check.
Single Payer health care, check.
An end to our illegal occupations of sovereign nations, check.
Closing of Guantanamo and other torture prisons, check.
Local and State Police who don't assault and brutalize peaceful protesters, check.
And many, many more!
I just call it like I see it. You don't have to like it, but you can do better than your response if you want me or anyone else to take you seriously.
Christ on a fucking crutch!

Ginsberg has been in ill health, and will probably not remain much longer, but confirming someone like her these days, would be difficult at best..

(31,706 posts)...and that's assuming you'd get 2/3rds of the Senate to agree...and you wouldn't. They're about to adjourn for the election year and unless called into special session the rushpublicans would do all they could to delay any hearings until after the election. The corporate media would go bonkers with "Presidential power play".
Let's just win the election and soldify the Senate and then hope Fat Tony retires first...

The only possible thing that MIGHT work would be if he nominated HRC, and sold it privately to the 'Pugs by saying "hey, it would mean you wouldn't be running against her in '16" .
Remember what happened when Johnson tried to make Abe Fortas Chief Justice in the summer of '68-Strom Thurmond blocked it and Nixon got to put Warren Burger in instead.
