WORLD-HERALD COLUMNIST

Ex-mobster Henry Hill, who died at 69 this month in California, first found a home in the witness protection program in an out-of-the-way place — Omaha.

Hill, an FBI informant whose story inspired a Nicholas Pileggi book and then the Martin Scorsese movie “Goodfellas,” wrote about his hidden life in an autobiography.

“The Feds' job was to find a town in America that was safe from the wiseguys who wanted to kill me,” Hill wrote. “It was a pretty safe bet there weren't a lot of wiseguys in Omaha.”

By “wiseguys,” of course, he didn't mean smart alecks — but rather members of the Mafia.

ask me to loan him $20 until payday. Several paydays went by with no payback. I asked Henry why Tommy hadn't paid me back and he told me to "drop it." Joe Pesce played Tommy in Goodfellas. AND HE STILL OWES ME $20!
