"He was especially proud that there were no casualties in his platoon until he was wounded."
Rest in peace Pinboy, we will miss you dearly.

15. On a serious note, I hope that an announcement about my death would be posted on DU
I know that I have dear friends here who would post "What happened to pinboy?" threads if I were to be absent for a while. My friends here would deserve an answer and a conclusion.
Whatever happens, you know that I love you all and the admins of the best dem site on the net. If I should change my mind about that, I'll let you know, lol. Until then, you know that you will all have my utmost respect and appreciation and love. And that will be my feeling when I go out.

(14,033 posts)Thanks for posting that.
I've said this a lot, but to repeat myself yet again, I looked up to him a lot over the handful of years I've been a member of this forum. I served as an Infantry Platoon Leader - the same job Pinboy held in Vietnam and I always thought I had a lot in common with him. I don't know if I did, but I would like to think I did at least.
He seemed kind and compassionate and at the same time tough as hell.
I don't know Pinboy beyond the keyboard, but I'm convinced that he made the world a better place. He has given me an example to follow. Although I might think so at times, my life didn't end with my combat experiences in Iraq. There is still a lot I can do to make the world a better place.

I wish I'd joined in on his hilarious threads, I would have gotten to know him a little, but I'm shy sometimes.

(3 posts)Bob was my brother, but the good people here at DU and his veteran's organizations were Bob's real family. Bob hadn't seen his son in 25 years, and my interactions with him were limited to an occasional dinner at a local restaurant. Sharing condolences among yourselves at DU is most appropriate.
Bob was a very frugal individual; he had a handful of garments in his closet and owned just two pair of shoes. Yet, when it came to helping the homeless or veterans organizations, his generosity knew no bounds. This beneficence was also extended to politicians who fought for the rights of all of us.
Bob was happiest when he was working to effect change, whether it was striking down restrictive voter laws or improving care for our veterans. Whether he was marching in the streets or sending letters to the major newspapers, he had but one goal in mind: to help others. I met an Army Colonel who, while riding the train to his job at the Pentagon, read a letter in the Washington Post which Bob had written in response to a Colman McCarthy column. The Colonel said it brought him to tears. That was Bob's way, to reason with others when possible, and to protest peacefully as a last resort.
I have a new appreciation for these words from Robert Frost's famous "Stopping by Woods on a Snowy Evening," written nearly a century ago:
But I have promises to keep,
And miles to go before I sleep,
And miles to go before I sleep.
Sleep well, brother, for you have kept the faith.
Your Du brothers and sisters will pass the torch until the victory is complete.

(8,554 posts)as our entire community grieves this loss of the very best of us, our pinboy3niner.
I wish to extend my heartfelt sympathies and condolences, for I could never imagine losing both of my younger brothers, as I do remember how hard it hit Bob when he'd tell us stories about the loss of Jim. Family meant so much to him and I do believe that is one of the reasons that he brought so much joy and laughter to this DU community.
You are so welcome here...peace to you and yours at this sad time.
sheshe2
(84,060 posts)Best, to you and your family in this difficult time. The words from Frost seem to sum up Bobs life perfectly.

(25,794 posts)The election of Trump is also channeling many of us into that direction.
Kinda sad about his son, but I totally see how working for the good of others and being involved in activism is a family.
I'm glad that he was able to devote his energies toward helping others.
As you probably know, he was the punster here on DU. He was known for his sense of humor. However, beneath a talented punster usually lies a gifted writer/speaker. The ability to write and speak, I believe is a true talent.
I so often wish I had talent in that area because those talents are a big part of being able to create change in our society.
I'm glad that he had those talents and most importantly, that he used them to help others.
It doesn't surprise me that he was generous, but also frugal. I think many of us here on DU are the same way.
Thank you so much for sharing about your brother. We're so sorry for your loss.

(12,174 posts)The loss of Bob, our beloved pinboy3niner, is a great loss for this community. As I noted a week ago, the news came as a punch to the gut. I'll just repeat what I posted then:
Pinboy3niner, I salute you!
His example reminds us that the best thing we can do for ourselves is to help others. I'll carry a bit of Bob's spirit with me as I go forward, and hope to make a small positive difference in the world myself.
