(2,404 posts)given his profound ignorance, but "laughing up your sleeve" is a legitimate expression. It means to be secretly amused, and stems from the days when mirth could be stifled by hiding your face in ruffles and loose, billowing sleeves on clothing.

My mother always said it. When we were kids, she used all kinds of old-fashioned expressions on us, and if we asked what it meant, she'd make us look it up.
No internet then. She had a big book of idioms that belonged to my grandmother.
