Carter got 50.1% of the vote Nationwide. But his 297 - 240 electoral win is pretty narrow by Electoral College standards.

For instance, a shift of less than 4,000 votes in Hawaii plus a shift of 5500 votes in Ohio would have given Ford the Electoral College victory. And that was after pardoning Nixon and declaring that the Soviets didn't dominate Eastern Europe during one of the debates.

So yes, pretty darn close. Maybe by a hair is an exaggeration. But considering he came back from a 33 point deficit in the polls during the summer, that's a pretty good showing

Without the pardon, he would have won in 1976.

Likewise, Pence is tainted by Trump's scandals. He may become President when Trumpy is forced to resign, but Pence will never win reelection.

Johnson was eligible to run twice because he served less than two years of Kennedy's term.

The 22nd Amendment provides: "No person shall be elected to the office of the President more than twice, and no person who has held the office of President, or acted as President, for more than two years of a term to which some other person was elected President shall be elected to the office of the President more than once."

The 22nd Amendment was pushed through by Republicans frustrated by FDR's quadruple election victories. It came back to bite them when their hero Reagan was term limited ...

They are part of the 30% of the electorate that Pence or anyone with an R behind his name would have. You can't win with 30%. There's another 10-15% that were and are "Trump guys". They are the ones with the red trucker caps. They also include the alt-right "Paul Ryan is a cuck" crowd. Those people love Trump way more than they love the Party. Pence won't have those people. Assuming Pence makes it through the scandal unscathed, they will see him as a traitor to Trump. For everyone else, he will be seen as a simpleton. Because he is an idiot.

"No person shall be elected to the office of the President more than twice, and no person who has held the office of President, or acted as President, for more than two years of a term to which some other person was elected President shall be elected to the office of the President more than once.
