I don't know how McC will ever live down the sight of McCain's powerful death gesture. Raising his arm, which is difficult for McCain, and providing his vote like that will live on forever in Senate history, imo.

(5,591 posts)While McCain had the grandstanding "contemporary history making" gesture (and the part of me that can appreciate a pointed, dramatic moment was reluctantly smiling), these two woman have firmly sided with the people's right to healthcare against a lot of crap ass white fart Republican males.

The thumbs up gesture was the gesture given by the crowd to signify death to the losing combatant. It mimiced the gesture of despatching your foe with an upward movement of your sword into their body. Thumbs down meant to put down the sword and to spare the loser.

(24,404 posts)In any case, it's just an interesting historical footnote at this point. The thumbs-down gesture and the meaning behind it is cemented in current culture and isn't going to change any time soon.
