An Evening with Hillary Clinton to Benefit Camp OlmstedSeptember 7 @ 7:30 pm - 9:00 pm
Hear from former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton as she discusses her faith and the recent election with Rev. Dr. Bill Shillady. Proceeds from this fundraiser will benefit Camp Olmsted.
Great to see her out in public again and doing what she's devoted her entire life to - helping people in general and children in particular. I wish I still lived down there (Riverside Church is about a mile from where I was) The great thing about this is that she's ALL proceeds will be given to Camp Olmsted.
From their announcement, "Camp Olmsted is located in Cornwall-on-Hudson, New York, and has been serving children from New York Citys neighborhoods for more than 110 years. Our program serves boys and girls between the ages of 6 and 14 and often provides their first outdoor camping experience."

(84,070 posts)You are right, she cares about the children. The ages of 6-14 are important formative years for these kids. Thank you to Hillary for making their lives a little richer.

It's refreshing to see a book-related event where the profit motive benefits a charity rather than someone's personal bank account.

Our local (very expensive) super market was Gristide's, I shopped at the local bodega a block away. I was still "establishing" myself career-wise, so was perpetually broke. I had a one-room studio, with a regular bathroom but folding doors closing off my "kitchen". My most expensive piece of furniture was my bicycle. But it was great living in the middle of the city, across the street from Central Park (I was a runner, so that was handy). Central Park turned out to be 90% of my recreation - it was free!
My rent was $340 a month at the time. Just out of curiosity I went to a real estate site to see how much the apartments cost now (it went co-op shortly after I moved). A studio like mine rents for $2700 a month (for owners who are investors), the selling price is about $600,000. The rooftop unit is for sale for $5.9M!!

(25,183 posts)we wouldn't be hearing about the story. Everything every politician does is about publicity. The same can generally be said about authors.
R B Garr
(17,019 posts)I can't imagine posting about a timeframe for him to go away as has been said about two female politicians here just recently.
Can't Hillary have a life and fans? Is that okay? She's also the wife of an ex-President.
customerserviceguy
(25,183 posts)about Bernie Sanders hobbling the next Democratic presidential nominee, but I am worried about that possibility with Hillary Clinton. The media is far more likely to give her airtime than to give it to him.
We need the candidates of the past to step aside after the midterms, and let someone who can get nominated and elected build up all the name familiarity, campaign donations, and airtime for their views have a fair shot at it. Trump's strategy to defeat seventeen other GOPers to get the nomination was to suck all of the oxygen out of the room for his opponents, no matter how outrageous the things he had to say to get that attention.
R B Garr
(17,019 posts)She's not exiled from society. Why can't she see people. What does that have to do with midterms? Your post is quite presumptuous.
customerserviceguy
(25,183 posts)that each party looks at how it did in the midterm elections to project what it needs to do in the presidential election just two years away from that point, especially the party that is NOT holding the White House.
If it's Hillary, Hillary, Hillary all the time, and Fox is sure to play her up as often as possible to bait our side into defending her, we don't get enough exposure for the people with the fresh faces and fresh ideas to make their case as to why they should be nominated, and then having secured that nomination, why they should be elected President.

For fucks sake. Leaders aren't given a chance. They fucking take it. They lead.
I don't want a "fresh face." I want a fighter.
You want in the ring? Then fucking jump in. And by the way, this is the Democratic Underground. And Hillary Clinton has been a Democrat since she could vote. We need Hillary out there so that all those "fresh faces with fresh ideas" can get a fucking clue.

(17,019 posts)offer have to slink away just because some GOP clown wants to obsess over Benghazi type idiocy. I totally agree with you that our party leaders can help the newcomers establish themselves. Hillary seems to understand this, so does Dean and I think Al Gore, too. Let them take the heat while others are developing a following.
R B Garr
(17,019 posts)are needed. Experienced politicians can help absorb a lot of the negative insanity thrown at them by the RW'ers and will give the newcomers some cover to develop. The GOP doesn't throw their seasoned politicians away no matter what. It's a shame that party stalwarts like Al Gore and Howard Dean for awhile are cast aside while people like Ralph Nader were stepping all over them.
And don't look now, but the GOP wants to bring Hillary back for more --- investigations, so we might be seeing her again. They will never stop, so why bow to them.
George II
(67,782 posts)...."about publicity".
It's a damned fundraiser for a good cause, ALL proceeds will go to Camp Olmsted, which serves NYC children who otherwise would not be able to get to summer camp. She is getting zero, nada, nothing.
Why are you shitting all over it?
George II
(67,782 posts)This isn't a stop on a book tour, it's a FUNDRAISER for a summer camp for NYC neighborhood children.
And it has nothing to do with anything that might happen next year or three years from now.

Will other folks who are not Democrats or running for its nomination also be accused of "stealing the limelight" if they fail to bury themselves underground or in a cave somewhere and dare show their faces in public?
Just curious, after seeing all the heated debate about double standards. Another former contender for the Dem nomination is still on a book tour, doing rallies and appearing in the media, is anyone going to ask if he's going to "continue to take the limelight" away from for any of the Dems who might be running for the nomination of their party?
George II
(67,782 posts)....for eternity for that, I guess.

(25,183 posts)Have you seen excerpts from Bernie's book appearing on one of the 24/7 news channels? I haven't.
But Hillary's "creep" remark got wide coverage. Hopefully, she gets this out of her system by the day after the midterm election, when its time to turn our attention to the person who has the best chance of beating Trump, or Pence, or whoever the GOP throws up as their nominee in 2020.
We have got to get rational adults back in control while there's still time to save our nation. Anything that distracts from that doesn't help.
Ninsianna
(1,349 posts)they bring up his name. Breathless posts about rallies and book signings, and daggers drawn when anyone mentions that he's selling a book.
And it's because so many like and and are interested in hearing what this "unpopular" winner of the popular vote, has to say.
Yeah, it got wide coverage for a reason. Women related to what she said, they felt it when it happened. What is it that *she* needs to get out of her system? That only *she* is attacked for? Hopefully those who still seethe at the mention of her name, who still cling to the RW's lies about her when they were coming from the faugressives or GOPers themselves, will get it out of their systems that reviling a popular politician who actually makes progress, and is greatly admired, is a pretty poor way to handle what happened in 2016.
We've got rational adults, she's one of them. They all need to get the irrational children who seem to be all about division, some sort of religious frenzy and seeking to disenfranchise Americans who make up the base of the Democratic party, under control. Giving them seats at the adult's table to let them throw tantrums isn't working out well.
That's the distraction that's not helping, not a book from an extremely popular politician whom everyone wants to hear from in September of 2017.
Throwing tantrums over media attention hogs who are selling books is rather silly, and it really does underscore the ridiculousness of the double standards that some easily distracted folks are applying. Less of this nonsense, rational adults who make up this party are really irritated by this silliness and will not tolerate it, even if the children cannot get it out their systems.

(37,462 posts)here run by various church groups and benefactors. There was a Jewish camp run by the Workmans Circle also, it continues today in Canada. Most operated from around 1850's to 1930's NY City had a Camp Moodna that was made from old subway cars. Monroe Methodists ran intergrated camps. It was a pretty big thing to get out of the hot city and have fun.
