It sounds easy to say to Floridians "Just get out" before Irma. But it isn't easy at all.

(Full disclaimer I now live back in Ohio but lived in SoFlo for 7 years.)

To many, including me before living in Florida, it seems logical and easy to simply get the hell out of Florida in a major hurricane is heading your way. But it isn't simple at all.

1. Jobs. If you leave you need to leave really early. Like days before businesses close/schools close, etc. Many businesses are vital to hurricane prep...grocery, gas stations, hardware, banks, etc. Then you have the types of businesses that can't close such as medical/fire/police, utilities, schools/shelters, etc.

2. Fuel. Already in most cases fuel is in shortage especially in South Florida. As people move more north through evacuations fuel will be harder to find all up I95 and I75.

3. Where do you go? No one knows exactly where this storm will go. You live in Southeast Florida...do you go to the Gulf Coast? It could hit there. Do you go to Jacksonville? It could hit there. Do you go to Georgia or South Carolina? It could hit there.

4. Money. It takes money to travel. Gas, lodging, food.

5. Pets. You have two adults and two kids with a 75 pound dog and a Honda Civic. Do you leave the pet(s) behind?

6. Gridlock. This is probably one of the biggest issues. You have 6 million people in palm Beach County, Miami-Dade, and Broward. I'd rather be in a decent structure during a hurricane than in a car on I95.

So it isn't easy to just uproot and leave.

People who think you can just evacuate millions of folks in a matter of a few days simply have not considered the logistics of emergency management.

I live in SoCal, good luck evacuating this area. Hell, I grew up on PHX, it would be a nightmare getting the current population out of PHX and that is in a desert surrounded by low mountains. Auto travel at peak levels doesn't work well.
