When Natasha Allen and her husband, Richard, embarked Monday on a five-day Royal Caribbean cruise to the Bahamas, the recently married couple expected a relaxing vacation.
While they had known that Hurricane Irma was potentially headed their way, the cruise line didnt cancel the trip, so they thought they were in the clear.
The couple spent one relaxing day in Nassau before learning Tuesday that their ship would be returning to Miami.
They arrived at 2:30 p.m. Thursday to a scene of unfolding chaos.

(15,543 posts)That started from this tropic port
Aboard this tiny ship.
...For a three hour tour, a three hour tour...
The weather started getting rough,
The tiny ship was tossed,
If not for the courage of the fearless crew
The Minnow would be lost, the Minnow would be lost.

(58,785 posts)but some others are, incredibly, just being dumped in the path of a giant hurricane. Norwegian is transferring passengers from a ship that came in to one headed away from the hurricane; something like 4000 people reportedly chose that option.
Question is why these ships are coming into Miami at all, instead of heading for a port out of the track, or not disembarking only those who needed to get off and then continue on with the rest.

(58,785 posts)to Miami, insurance issues, labor issues including contracted legal, supply and staffing to issues, fuel issues, procedures in place that are required to be followed and a vacuum where new procedures are needed, need to clear ship space to evacuate employees who've been guaranteed evacuation, and, and... What are the comparative risks that 4000 passengers could be stranded on the sea without food, water, medicine, electricity, toilets, timely rescue?
I'm a little surprised the law would allow cruise ships or airlines to dump passengers in the path of a hurricane or middle of a violent revolution, though. Does it? How would the availability of public shelters factor into this? Perhaps the numbers who find themselves stranded are over-suggested by the press. Their bias toward sensationalizing is, after all, as eternal as the pursuit of profits.

(8,394 posts)I love the Caribbean and I know enough NOT to go from August through at least October. Yes, it's cheaper then, but...hurricane season!
June - Too Soon (first month)
July - Standby (for any news of a storm)
August - You must (prepare in case a storm comes)
September - Remember (to standby)
October - It's all over (last month)

(7,107 posts)Okay, who wouldn't want to ride out the storm while on the moored ship?
I think that would be kind of fun and exciting.

(3,827 posts)One of the worst experiences of my life- We're talking 30 ft waves crashing against the hull of the ship we were on. And we were hundreds of miles from the hurricane. I can't imagine riding a storm out inside a ship that is in port. #CraCra

(7,645 posts)Ah, Hell no.
Not a good idea if you are prone to seasickness to say nothing of the danger. I can easily picture one of those super top-heavy, floating hotels flipping over or being pounded to scrap metal against the docks and sunk.

Biggest impact was a few of the last meals were. Shall we say creative..
They by no means we're short of food but some items disappeared
The cruise line worked hard to help with plane reservations
Sue was always impressed with her cruise experience.
After this she was even more impressed

(16,866 posts)i checked thru my emails and did not find a clue
she was a very close friend and we had sunday breakfast together every week for a number of years
because we knew we would have breakfast in a couple of days we did not email that much....that and she did backoffice phone stuff so a 5 pm the computer got turned off and she would loathe to turn it on after hours.
i know it was not ncl, carnival or disney......
i can not check with her cause she died a bit over a year ago....one of those heart surgeries that somehow go very wrong....
which is too bad cause she loved to talk about how she liked her cruise line
