We must be a nation of acceptance
There are times in the history of a nation that define its moral character. We are living in such a time.
Our nation stands at a crossroads with the decision about the fate of DACA recipients known as "Dreamers." The path we choose will determine if we hold close to our creed, "Out of Many, One" or veer off into territory fraught with division, anger and the loss of our moral standing.
DACA recipients are young people of good character. They undergo background checks and must pay to stay in this country; they contribute to our communities and are for all intents and purposes Americans. The choice to come here to start a new life was not theirs to make, but they have persevered and woven themselves into the fabric of our daily lives. Our country would not be the same without them.
We ask that all of the elected representatives of our state make every effort possible to ensure that these young people are given what they deserve a chance to stay in the only country they know and call home. The American Dream is still alive, and those who dream of finding it should have the opportunity to pursue it. We are a nation of immigrants: We must not fail those who ask for our acceptance. History is watching.
