General Discussion
Related: Editorials & Other Articles, Issue Forums, Alliance Forums, Region ForumsHow the hell did Rick Scott ever get elected to anything?
Incredibly inarticulate, providing absolutely ZERO sense of being in charge. No projection of strength or competence in handling this crisis.
Stumbling over WRITTEN OUT prepared remarks, rushing through his providing emergency phone numbers, not repeating them enough, all so he can read off info that people on the move have no need for.
"Look at me! I'm governating!"
Pathetic. I have NEVER heard a government official less adept at acting the spokesperson for such a situation.

(24,461 posts)How voters think them qualified/competent over most Democratic candidates is also baffling. It seems like smearing others and ginning up the fear (and then rigging the system to keep challengers at a disadvantage) seem to pretty much be their keys to victory.

That's how.

(66,530 posts)He's the perfect person to serve as governor of a hot mess like Florida. Florida is a state-sized dumpster fire.

(6,979 posts)With an inkling that Florida's voting system has been compromised since 2000, I draw my own conclusions from there.

(1,301 posts)He has recently gotten better but everyone at the time knew he was a snake-oil salesman. He still came within a percent. The Florida Democratic Party did us no favors in that election.

(11,949 posts)But The response to this in coming storm is as good as I have seen.
Just because I don't like him doesn't mean I'm going to lie to myself or others and pretend he's doing a poor job.
Most of the people I've talked to who are actually in Florida and dealing with this hurricane agree.
Now in every other aspect of governing he is evil to the core.

(42,007 posts)He's staying close to the information, being appropriately frightening but giving specific info for people who need or will need help, and I haven't heard threats toward anyone or lauding of anyone. I despise the guy but having been through my share of storms I think he scores high so far.

(22,430 posts)He has no empathy.
He can't even fake helping people whose lives will be ruined by Irma.
He is everything the Republican Party represents.

(825 posts)No fan of Scott for sure but think he was smart to declare an emergency early. One benefit it allows people to stock up on prescriptions. He has been trucking gas down to S. FL. I've not watched everything but I think he is doing a good job here.
And before you throw me under the bus, I donate to and walk the pavement for DEM candidates.
And I live in FL.
Just the geography alone makes evacuation difficult. But Tallahassee is packed full of people. And many going through further north.
And our Mayor (DEM) s also doing a fine job. This is going to be rough. But we will get through it.

(42,775 posts)They have all kinds of crafty and sneaky ways of winning elections.
And Scott's record shows he is about as devious as they come.
Weekend Warrior
(1,301 posts)He is very reserved and consistent when campaigning. He tries to stick to economics. Doesn't stay in front of the cameras unless it's a situation like this. He even minimizes what he considers to be major legislative accomplishments.
Bush and Scott nailed it with Floridians. Scott is even better at it than Bush was. Stay out of the news the best you can. To the point people forget who you are. Scott is more likely to do an interview on a local station about opening trade with Cuba or giving business incentives to move to your area. Small interviews. I know it sounds strange but that is the way to the heart of Florida moderates.

(10,857 posts)He fucked the entire state by cutting back every single safety-related service, so that rich people can pay lower taxes, and now he's asking for the people he fucked to come out of their debris and RISK THEIR LIVES FOR FREE to fix things...
... So that rich people can pay lower taxes.

(825 posts)And get through this. I live in Florida and I'm not thinking much about Scott's politics. He is leading us through this and doing a good job IMO.
