Can Democrats end their civil war over single-payer?September 12, 2017 Alex Kotch

When U.S. Sen. Bernie Sanders introduces his Medicare-for-All legislation on Wednesday, advocates of a single-payer, government-sponsored health care hope it will be the end of a bitterly fought policy battle that has roiled the Democratic Party for generations.
Since Democratic President Harry Truman first proposed a government-sponsored universal health care system in 1945 and since a Democratic president and Democratic congress first enacted Medicare and Medicaid in the mid-1960s progressives have hoped that the United States would follow other industrialized countries by guaranteeing health care to all citizens.
Indeed, many of the original proponents of Medicare hoped the system would ultimately be expanded to cover the entire country as former Social Security commissioner Robert Ball wrote, We expected Medicare to be a first step toward universal national health insurance.

(423 posts)What's divisive is that it's being used by non-Democrats to attack Democrats.

(24,461 posts)Ever since Reagan characterized anyone who supports what 31 countries have without issue as a Communist, both parties have been eating his bullshit ever since.
To me, if one can't support a human right without having to ask "where's the money going to come from", GTFO of this party. If one cannot support even a multi-payer system, LEAVE. Join the Republican party. I EXPECT Conservatives to be assholes on human rights. NOT us.

However the Democrats in the House will do what they need to do to protect the ACA and the people who depend on it now.

When you have senators like Shaheen of NH getting on the bandwagon- times have changed.

Many (most) want universal healthcare in their hearts, now is the time to appeal to their brains.
Slogans or saying "other countries do it" isn't going to carry the day. But a plan that makes sense could.
Time to get busy!

(17,665 posts)..we all want to lead and not follow. That's cuz we are socially superior to the 'other side' who is a party of sheep. Having all leaders isn't OK either....but at least we get some pretty damned good ideas from one another...we just have to agree to the BEST one.
