I'm connected to the outside world again!

Irma kicked our asses here. My place minor flooding still no power as of this morning, they just got our road cleared yesterday for safe travel out of our community.

The owner of the company my brother works for has power and he's out of town & he told us to stay at his place (luckily my brother is very important to him).

Internet just came back up this morning. The bad news is sheet flow finally hit us this morning. 1st floor flooding but it's only garages & storage on the first floor, the living quarters are on the 2nd & third floors.

Hopefully we have enough groceries till we can get out of here.

They are telling us it will be at least another two weeks before we get power and my cell phone service is non existent.

Before the hurricane I was in phone contact with another DUER here in S.W. Florida her name is Maraya1969. I am worried about her. Any information would be greatly appreciated.

It sounds like you did not suffer that significant of damage. I have three partners and one associate at my firm who are having to deal with between two inches to three feet of water. The sad thing is that the same amount of repairs are needed for two inches of water compared to three feet.

If not, you are lucky. Even an inch or two means that you have to tear out about four feet of drywall on the entire floor to stop mold

Crack in foundation may not be that serious if the building is still level

When the center of the storm hit us, I lost it! Ended up in the bathtub with my pet and a mattress on top of us.

Going through the eye was eerily strange. Right before the eye I thought the building was going to come down on us, then all at once dead quiet & no wind & rain. After the eye passed, we had very strong winds again but no rain.

This damn hurricane went on all day long and into the night.

I always worry about you too. You have been such a great friend.

I do not know where you were, but Tampa, while it thankfully escaped the fates of places like Jacksonville or Naples. was all day terror, as we were supposed to get the worst of it. Even it it went westward, it was goign to glide right over my area of the county, where there were plenty of grand old oak trees ready to fall and cut the house like a wedding cake.

in Naples and Nokomis. They're ok.. was especially worried about my sister in law.. in her 70's with many health issues. She's doing ok with her daughters.. Nephew works for power company.. working nonstop.

As a side note. we visited neice and nephew 5 years ago in Nokomis.. They had just bought their property with an old cabin on it, that they lived in while building their house. they are right on the waterway. Nephew was telling me about how they would build a small home because regulations required a 15 ft elevation and many other tight building codes that added costs. He wasn't complaining, said it all made sense if they got hit, and they got hit. .. no flooding. Only property damage was loss of a large oak tree. A lot to be said for those regulations.

I knew with my last post before the hurricane, I needed to get online as soon as possible to let my DU friends know what was going on.

As of this writing the shell flow has now consumed the first floor garages. The only way we are leaving this house now (at least for awhile) is in a boat.

Will keep you posted.

Mine was seven years ago when a heavy rain flooded my building's lower level garage. Believe it or not, the car started when they came to haul it away. It made funny noises and sounded like it was in its death throes. The water line inside showed that the water had come up to just below the side windows.

Sorry about that.

Or the flooding afterwards.

Due to sheet flow, the flooding is still happening and in Lee & Collier counties, there are still about 300,000 people without power (in S.W. Florida! ) The heat!

I am still without power and cable and not projected to get it until Tuesday. Soon by comparison. Yikes!

But we only got wind damage and were spared the flood damage some of my friends and colleagues got. Can also move about in a community restocked with supplies quickly. I consider myself very fortunate.

I think I should probably quit my bitching about a 90 degree house.

Stay safe!!!! I hope relief comes soon.

No power at my place but I do expect it to be restored today. Over half a million originally down in my County and as of this morning at six am they were down to twenty-six thousand without.

As of yesterday almost all of our traffic lights had been restored. Roads, for the most part, have been clear since Wednesday.

We had no real tidal surge, which was our big concern, and/so flooding was non-existent.

Just last night I found a hotel room. My wife and child headed to family a little bit north of us. I stayed to keep the business going. I missed her and my son and wanted to get us back together.

I'm thinking you are just south of Ft. Meyers? Somewhere around Marco?

Sorry about how slow the transition back to normalcy is going for you and your area. From what I felt here I can't imagine what it was like just south of us. We really got lucky in Pinellas.
