The flag represents the freedoms that our soldiers helped to defend by fighting from foreign incursions.
This is an abstract idea. Liberals believe the flag represents a country that supports freedoms without limitations - except for the laws that are legally established. And for that matter, we also have the freedom to challenge those laws, when we feel it's necessary.
Conservatives treat the flag like a deity. Do not question them, or you're an infidel. But, look more closely and you can see how this is just another purity test that shields a system that keeps their authority safe from scrutiny or challenge. The flag, to conservatives, is just another framing tactic.
When soldiers fight on foreign soil, which of the two concepts do you think represents their true mission?

(13,270 posts)War of 1812. Our war against Japan in WWII. For the most part our military has been used to attack other nations, occasionally justifiably, frequently not at all.
The flag represents our nation.
When I was 15 back in 1973, I wore a little American flag sewed on the ass of my jeans because of Vietnam and Nixon. A lot of us did. And I did not fear getting beat up or abused for it. I wore it because I love my country, but my country was going down the toilet.

(10,602 posts)Can you imagine being stuck behind a pick up with two HUGE flags flapping in your face going down the road. Personally I find it annoying and obnoxious. What was worse last summer some young 20 something had an American flag and a Confederate flag flapping in he back.
