Several NASCAR team owners said Sunday they would not condone racers protesting during the national anthem, amid protests by sports players at football and baseball games.
There were no protests reported during The Star-Spangled Banner" at the Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series in New Hampshire, according to The Associated Press.
Former NASCAR champion Richard Petty told the AP that any member of his team would be fired if they chose to protest the national anthem. Petty now owns Richard Petty Motorsports.
Anybody that dont stand up for the anthem oughta be out of the country. Period. What got em where theyre at? The United States, Petty said in comments reported by The AP.

(12,002 posts)Short rack oval racing has been my passion my entire life. NASCAR has a diversity program to bring in racers of color. One AA racer currently being mentored is an acquaintance that has raced at my local track.
Darrell Wallace Jr won in the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series at our NASCAR Track at Michigan this summer and competed in the Monster Energy Series there in June.
Having attended over 600 races in my lifetime, there are very very few racers of color competing on the grass roots level. NASCAR can't just find people with no racing background and "promote" them without having experience racing.
Until there are a sizeable number competing at the local race tracks, there will never be more than a handful in NASCAR.

The next thing you'll be telling me is that just because Petty hired a black man, Petty probably doesn't think that what happened to Philando Castile was right ....
Caping for racist POS Richard Pett because he hired an African-American
By the way, WHY did Strom have a black daughter seeing as he was a racist, segregationist POS like Thurmond? Now, if you can't see a link there between Thurmond and Petty I feel sorry for you.

(13,081 posts)And not just messing with us. But maybe we -- the SJWs of the world -- are doing a shitty job explaining ourselves, so here goes:
There are very, very few people in America that hate white males, either on an organized basis or unconsciously. We know this through history, through observable facts (white males are the least discriminated-against group in modern America), and through active science (there's a whole lot of brain science done on the subject; look it up sometime).
People of color are more likely to be the victims of bigotry than are white people; rich people generally have it better than white people. I don't think those statements are particularly controversial. Here's why we think Petty is an asshole: as a rich, white male, he doesn't have to worry about the same shit that Black people do, including rich Black people. So it's very, very easy for him to say how patriotic he is and to wave flags during the national anthem. He doesn't have to worry that he or a friend or a loved one will be beaten or accidentally murdered by a jumpy cop that doesn't even know he's got an implicit bias towards darker-skinned people (which happens frequently in African Americans, too, by the way). Because of that, it's very easy for wealthy white guys to NOT protest.
I sincerely doubt that most of us believe he's a sheet-wearing Klansman on Tuesday night, what we're saying is that he's spouting off about a life-and-death issue for many people of color and doesn't seem to realize that he's spouting off from a place of incredible privilege. He comes across as Marie Antoinette shouting "Let them eat cake!" to the starving peasants. Probably not evil, but definitely tone deaf.
(And I'm sorry, but NASCAR's only good in person, but in person it's freaking awesome)

(12,002 posts)I have been a huge fan of the sport for decades and have attended well over 100 races.
I see this general hatred of NASCAR here constantly and to many here on DU it is automatically a racist sport with racist fans, competitors and management. I get sick and tired of it.
I posted a reasoned response on why there is a general lack of AA racers and not one person made any comment on that, but post after post calling Petty a racist and disparaging remarks about NASCAR fans having no teeth, & being mouth breathing rednecks with little education which is generally given to all people from the South here on DU.
Richard Petty is commenting on a disrespect for the anthem and as a team owner, he doesn't want his employees at the race track protesting it. That is his right as the owner of the team. I think people can have personal views about the anthem protests without automatically making them racists by definition.
The Petty's have a very admirable organization that they founded called Victory Junction which is a free summer camp for children with severe illnesses (many uncurable) and their families that has meant a huge difference to 25K kids and family members at no cost to them. This camp was founded in honor of Richard's grandson Adam who was killed at a race in New Hampshire at a very young age.
Yet all that is ignored and he is called a racist with absolutely no evidence. When I mentioned that he has hired an AA driver, Bubba Wallace, the only comments called Wallace a token, which frankly is a big insult to him and IMO a bigoted comment of it's own.
I take great offense when my sport is regularly denigrated by ignorant people that admit they don't watch it anyway.
